I have an old (1920's) Goerz Dagor 210mm F6.8 lens that I've just recently gotten and am trying to find the best way to use BW contrast filters with it and, I suppose, a polarizer as well. I picked up a 30.5 step up ring but now I see that it won't thread to the front of the lens. I may try a 30mm > step up ring next, but I'm wondering if these old lenses were never meant to have filters threaded on the front? Any input?

A series V filter holder might work.

Yes, find a slip-on series adapter in the proper size for your lens barrel (probably will be for V or VI filters.) Then find the series filters that will fit it . I think I have a 210 Dagor. I'll check what I use.

Just checked and the adapter for my 1902 Dagor uses Series VII filters (this a convenient size of filters that can be used for many lenses).

Yep, Series filters are the solution for a lot of odd/old/unusual lenses. They’re cheap, plentiful, and the Kodak brand seem as good now as the day they were made.

I have a rainbow of Series VI filters along with adapters for 4-5 cameras and lenses. I use them on everything from box cameras to a Summicron.

Unfortunately the Series polarizers are mostly hazy delaminated junk now. I gave up looking when I lucked into a few specific sizes I needed. However, I was considering a 44-49mm adapter for this purpose. 44mm is close enough to jam into a Series VI ring. I’m also not opposed to superglue or electrical tape when custom solutions are required.

Series filters are also used by Hasselblad on their wide C lenses, series VIII = 63mm, and retained by a ring or the hood, which aren't that odd nor unusual as Leica had these too on their longer Tele-Elmarit lenses.

Another option would be (if you can find one - I don't know that Lee makes them any more) a gelatin filter holder that uses a rubber band on the back as a "universal" mount adapter. It uses 100mm square filters, so just about any lens you might have will work with it short of some unusual monsters like my Kodak 405mm f4.5 Portrait lens, which needs something like a 120mm filter.

If you already have filters in 55mm or 67mm then you can just get an adapter to a series 7 or 8 and put the filters right on that. You'd have to double check those are the right sizes, but I'm pretty sure they are.

I double-checked you and your recollection is correct. Well, well… I sure learned something today. I knew that 67mm filters fit the Series VIII adapters but just learned, after years of using series filters, that 55mm filters fit Series VII adapters. The thread pitch might not be exact but they fit good enough. It’s a good thing I didn’t get rid of my (formerly) redundant 55mm filters!
