What filters are best for a Pentax K1000 50mm lens? I'm looking for a decent filter for super bright days and for cloudy days. Suggestions?

Duh. Sorry. Neutral Density Filter is what I'm looking at. I just can't figure out the size of my lens so I know which one to get...the mm - I found a 50mm, a 52mm and a 54mm.

Depended how fast your lens is between 49mm to 52mm.

OK, first determine the diameter of your filter ring. If your lens has a lenscap, the ring diameter will be printed in small letters in the center on the inside of the the cap.

Next, what do you want the filter to do?

Using colour transparency or colour negative film:

If it is to take shots under cloud cover or in shade and you want to reduce the 'blue" shift, get a "daylight" filter or an "81A" (slightly yellow).

If you want to reduce the intensity of bright light in full sun, get one or more "neutral density" filters (these come in a variety of strengths and reduce the light hitting the film by one, two, or more "stops"), and can be used acccumulatively (i.e."stacked").

If you want to reduce the glare of reflections from leaves, grass, glass, haze, etc, get a polarizing filter.

If you want to accentuate the clouds and darken blue sky (works only at right angles to the sun), thereby also coincidentally reducing the dynamic range of the scene, you can use the polarizing filter for this purpose as well

All these filters screw into the aptly named "filter thread" in front of your lens. You can, then, also screw a lenshood into the front of the filter (a good idea, as it reduces flare on the front of the filter itself).

If using black and white "silver halide based" film, there are other filters required, although the polarizer and the neutral density filters will still work, as described above.

My Takumar and Pentax lenses don't have that. I thought they did; I guess I never actually checked.

I just need to find the original lens cap. I know I have it...I'm just not sure where.

A polarizer/neutral density is what I was thinking. Thanks for the hint how to find the diameter of the lens, though. You also verified what I was reading on some of the parts store sites about the filters, too. Thank you!

I was thinking that was the case when I saw the description...or possibly a typo.

Which lens is it? If it's a 50 or 55mm lens, and just says SMC Pentax, it will be 52mm. If it says SMC Pentax-M, it's 49mm. If it says SMC Pentax-A, it's 49mm, unless it's the f/1.2, which is 52mm.

Found the original lenscap in the bottom of an unused camera bag. It's 49. *sigh*
