I'm using a Leica M3 at present (it's a loan only!). It needs a UV filter and lens hood. Is 39mm the correct filter size?

That's correct - it came without the closeup parallax adapter - it focusses to 1m without it.

All of the 50 Summicrons use a 39mm thread. The original Leica hoods were clip on

The Ch clone hoods are just as effective but cheaper.
