I just received a filter for a Canon ltm 50mm lens. The filter (UV) is in good shape, but the glass is loose and moves a bit. I don't think it's in danger of falling out. Is this common with older filters? It was supposed to be in Mint condition...and I'm not sure if I think that applies or not.

Does the filter have a retaining ring? If so- sometimes they loosen up and need to be tightened.

I've seen filters with glass held in with flat springs, "pinched metal rims", stamped into place, and retaining rings.,

There a two kinds of retaining rings:

-) screwed in
-) clipped in

A clipped retaining ring one may take out and twist it out of its plane, thus giving it a spring effect against the glass for tighter fit.

To the OP's question:
There will be no technichal problem with a loose filter. Neither for lateral shift of the glass, nor for swing against the optical axis.

Yes, follow this advice.

Rolleiflex Bay II and Bay III filters are also a bit loose. Years ago, I read that they were made like this to eliminate stress flexing, although I am a bit dubious of this happening.

Canon LTM is 40. Try to find 40 to 40.5 step up ring and get modern, quality filters for normal price. The old 40mm filters are junk.

The 50/1.4 uses 48mm filters, 50/1.2 uses 55mm filters, 50/0.95 uses 72mm filters.

The 50/2, 50/1.9, 50/1.8, 50/2.8 use 40mm filters. I forget what the 50/3.5 uses.

The 40mm Walz filters are coated, at least the ones I have. The 40mm Walz vented hood is very good- I have 2 of them.
