Films / Papers That you would horde

Every time there is a plant closing, or a company dying, I find out about all these great doomed products when people start hording them.

What products (film / paper) would you horde if they were about to vanish?

In May I found out about Agfa's RC 310 which I was going to stock up on around christmas for contact sheets when my crappy Kodak glossy RC finally ran out. Now I need to look for something else.

A friend loved Brovira. I missed that window, but found some dusty boxes of it in a photoshop in DC. Plan to see how badly it's fogged later in the month.

Anyway, what would you buy a walk-in freezer for?

If I found out Ilford was about to vanish, and I'd won that Powerball in a different post, I'd buy every last bit of paper and chemicals I could get my hands on. With Agfa, it's Rodinal and APX 100 120mm. With Fuji, it would be Acros 100.

There may not be anything special about these things, but they are what I like and use and I would get them so I could continue to do thus!

Let's see...

I already have a freexer full of APX 100 in 120, 6.5x9cm, 9x12cm and 13x18cm. No need for more of that.

Bergger Art Classic Silver Supreme? Nah - it's too specialised, even if it's perfect for those rare images that look great on it.

Well - If Ilford were to stop making FP4+, I might have to buy another freezer.

Ditto....

While I like my Velvia 50, once it is gone, I'll use the 100 (I've already started using it). My images are more tied to my vision of the world, not the materials I use. If I can still use Velvia in 40 years, then great, but if not, I'll find a substitute.

Perhaps I mis-stated the question of the post: I'd like to know which products you really find special and are currently in production; I'd like to experience these things before there's a mad rush upon their demise.

Velvia 50 - it is supposed to be gone once the stocks are depleted. It has been replaced by the newer 100 (not 100F). Some people like it, some don't. I know people that are trying to fill up the freezer with whatever they can get.

Over the several years of shooting, I have found many things good, but have never had a special attachment to anything at all, I started out shooting Kodachrome in an ISO of around 10...Yes, that is right 10! and it was good, shot 25 for a long time, didn't like 64 and hate the 200, so moved to a different slide film which has been Velvia 50, and I shoot alot of E100VS, and shot E100S, Shot ektar 25 for a long while, then that went away, so moved to a different print film, I currently shoot NPS 160 for most print stuff, most of my LF stuff in 4x5 has been done on Velvia 50, and now will have to move to velvia 100 I guess, just waiting for long term feed back from Robert...

Anyway, shot lots of stuff that is good, and have a great many rolls of stuff in the freezers, but have never been so attached that I feel I need to horde anything...

I just sent a batch of 100+ Velvia 100 trannies to Calypso. Most shot in New Zealand, although some here in Hawaii. Should get them back next week.

I wouldn't horde anything either, but my favorite film by far is Fuji Neopan ACROS 100. On second thought, I might buy a few extra rolls of it if I heard it was going to disappear.

About the only thing I'd buy an extra freezer for is Tri-X (the older stuff), and I guess the newer stuff too, since the old stuff is already gone.

Still haven't found a paper I'm in love with -- just a few I hate. Agfa RC 310 came close, but I don't really like RC for my high-end work.

APX 100 is unique because of it's color rendition. Try it and weep. Shoot a red haired girl with freckles.

Taste Agfa MCC while you can.

Kentmere is a trove of fine stuff.

I am generally a "be here now" type, but wish I had grabbed a few boxes of Kodak's PPF 120. Hmmmmm, that was a beautiful film. Gotten used to adapting, though, there's been so many color neg types discontinued, I stopped worrying.

If I had the money & space (which I don't) I'd buy a lifetime supply of 8x10 TMY and Azo right now.

I got to print on Portriga Rapid one time, and toned...it was very beautiful paper.

I would like to get some EFKE film also, but its been out for a VERY long time.

Also, AZO paper...now that its all gone I am nearly out, and cannot get anymore.

Please excuse me for not knowing how to interpret your statement. Are you professing your l33t photo-chemical skills, or advertising some service. And if so, how much would you change for a box of 100 8x10 of the above, approximately. I have a friend who might be interested.

I also am content to go with what's available, and what I can make myself.

The old Portriga was a great paper. I've seen prints on Velour Black and lament never having tried it myself. I've got some Haloid Industro, but it's gotten a bit foggy--still useful for some things though.

If you're looking for the classics currently available, try Azo, J&C Exposition graded, Efke PL100, FP4+, TXP, J&C Classic 400. There's some really nice stuff out there.

Get some amidol. Azo and J&C Exposition (Efke Emaks) look great in amidol.

I would go for whatever will be sold cheaper so I can stock up perhaps enough in quantity. It's funny the "free" market seems to work in both ways when you look at the prices on Ilford and Agfa products.

To chase the outgoing products/goods of which prices are sky-rocketting is not practical.

I would have to say that the other posts explain that I don't want to sell the stuff and I don't want to go into business. I would be happy to teach you how to do it yourself.

It isn't that much harder than making Azo paper, just use bromide instead of chloride for starters.

And, I am not l33t by any means, just trained in that area of expertise.

I would horde AgfaColor film .. 100 and 400 ISO both. I understand the "stuff" and it will be sorely missed when my meager supply runs out. I suppose I'll have to go to Fuji ... might not be all that bad, but there will be a learning curve.

For Color Paper ... I would take some of my millions and pressure/ draw/ bribe/ beat mercilessly Ilford into producing IlfoColor paper again. The most promising substitute seems to be Fuji Crystal Archive .. certainly NOT THE SAME ... but after four days of struggling like crazy with Kodak, with *no* sign of ever achieving an acceptable (to me) color balance, results with Fuji seem to be in sight.

Of course APX100, and a much undervalued film - AgfaPan 400 - and I'm sure that eventually Rodinal will survive ... whatever its final brand label will be.

*WE* will not let it die!!

Horde-ing more because of price and availablility than usniqueness but I have my lifetime supply of EFKE 100 film for the 8X10. About 1300++ chances to get a half dozen right. I also stocked up on Kodak Aerial Recon Panatomic X and Plus X in 5" wide long rolls. The pan-X is THE ideal film for pt / pd printing on 5X7's and even a 5X12 if I ever get lucky and find one. Or 5X14 if Jim Chinn would build me one. I'd recommend treating yourself to J&C Classic museum weight paper while it's available. Develop it in my ANSCO 135 formula for some of the prettiest warm blacks you'll ever see. It wants a L-O-N-G scale neg. If I have a neg that falls right on that paper perfectly, I know it will also print very well as a platinum.
