Is there a name for this little steel rolling pin thing in medium-format film-holders, and do replacements exist? I've got a couple cameras missing them.

looks like what we call a steel rolling pin thingy. What does it do, and are your film holders missing them because the broke off or because they were not made with one?

Looks as if it just makes sure the film rolls up neatly --- if the film holders work ok without them, why worry?

On one of them it doesn't seem to affect anything, but the other makes a very loud and annoying screeching noise when the film is advanced.

My guess is that it helps keep the roll of exposed film from unrolling, with disastrous results.

For the screechy one, it need a drop of fine oil. As in watchmakers oil.
If push comes to shove though you might get away with a small drop of Naptha/lighter fluid.

It screeches because the pin is MISSING. The thin metal part is rubbing directly against the backing paper when the film is advanced, and I think that's what's causing it to screech.

What make/model of camera is it? Are all the cameras of the same type? I have seen some film chambers that have the spring, but no roller. I assume it's to keep pressure on the roll as it's diameter decreases when film is used. I would expect that any replacement would be a spare part specific to the particular camera.

These provide tension to the film and help ensure that the film feeds properly into the film gate and stays flat while there.

Are yourproblem rollers on removeable inserts? If so, I would recommend replacing the insert.

These are most important on the feed spool, to keep the tension whilst winding on. On my DaYi 617 back it was there, but wasn't actually putting any tension on the film as I wound on. End result, the film wound on the takeup spool rather loosely, giving massive (there was a url link here which no longer exists) when I changed rolls.
I bent it in closer to the feed spool to give it more tension, that problem's gone now...

One is on a film insert for a Mamiya M645, which is fine because I have a couple of them, but the other is on a Mamiya C22 TLR and isn't interchangeable. Both look like the same size pin would fit in the metal clip.
