Film overlapping exposures...ugh!

I just pulled a roll out of the wash and the one shot I didn't want to have this happen to, it did. I'm shooting with a Bessa RM3. I've had a few frames, on previous rols, that have different widths between frames. But this time, it halfway wound so the next shot was halfway on the previous one.

Anyone had this happen or know why? And how to possibly avoid it?

the sprocket wheel that drives the film is supposed to move eight sprockets for each frame. If it is not, it is not driving the film through far enough which means it is slipping.

Which sucks, because that's usually a job for a repair person. You can possibly reduce the tendency for it to slip, if that is what it is doing, but turning the rewind lever backwards to loosen up the film in the cannister, but this can only be viewed as a stop-gap.

When my Leica CL started doing this I, very sadly, replaced it because it was pretty worn anyway.

no clue. A new camera should not do that. Did it do it just this one frame? Is it possible you advanced the film when the rewind lever, for some reason, could not turn and the film skipped a sprocket?

Open the camera, put your finger on the sprocket wheel, advance the film advance lever and count the teeth that go under your fingernail. See if the wheel has any play in it or can be stopped from turning. It should turn without slipping.

Could be a film tensioning problem, or you're short stroking the camera?

The most likely problem is the rewind clutch is not engaging properly most likely cause is too stiff or too much or lube that has migrated cause the camera has been to hot and cold.
Local repair person if it is not under warranty.

Not sure which Cosina variant you have some sprocket shafts have a screw head exposed in a slot on sprocket shaft this should go up an down the full extent of the slot with the rewind button and wind on...

Don't use force or magic liquids just try and assist any movement...
