I called Film Emporium to see if they still sell short ends like I've seen mentioned on here over the years. There was no mention of it online, and the link to the store no longer works. The person who answered didn't believe they still sold short ends of film, but told me they sell film insurance (which I don't have a use for because I'm not making movies). I asked if they were the same company with that name that used to sell short ends.
I suspect it is the same company, I recall they sold production insurance for many years in addition to film stock. Even when film was what they shot movies on their short end selection was poor, at least at their Hollywood office. But hardly anyone rolls real film to shoot a movie anymore, so short ends are rare.
Short ends are definitely getting rare, even here in Los Angeles. Your best bet may be to call some of the camera rental houses that still do film equipment (Clairmont? Keslow? Camera House?) and see if they know of anyone that has ends for sale. Maybe the people at the Foto-Kem lab can provide you with leads as well.
