Film Develop Issue

Hi all,

I was hoping someone here may be able to identify an issue with a roll that I have processed.

The issue appears as a brownish stain on the negative, not immediately evident but visible under strong back light. Under a loupe it appears to be bubbly or well defined grain at the edges of the patch. It's not only patchy but also in wavy lines. Not all frames were affecting and it appears between frames indicating a film or dev issue.

I initially thought the stain may be a fixer issue and re-fixed the negatives to no avail.

Truly stumped and would appreciate any thoughts you may have. I have processed hundreds of rolls and it is the first time I've seen anything like this.

Some details:
Film: HP5 which has been through an unknown number of xray passes but less than 10. Always in carry on luggage.
Camera: Hasselblad 500C
Chemicals: Ilfosol 3, Ilfostop and Ilford Rapid fix
Patterson plastic reels and daylight developing tank.

Unfortunately no pictures of the negative as very difficult to capture the marks without scanning.

Could this be dichroic fog?
Have you tried re-fixing?

Looks like moisture damage to film to me.

+1

Film likely got wet and then dried before processing. Maybe even before exposure.

Or there was some slight fixer contamination before developing. I don't think there is much you can do to save these.

Best,

Doremus

Thank you all so much for your suggestions. I will definately be keeping an eye out on this going forward. It is possible that the tank was still wet/ contaminated prior to use so this gives me something to look out next time. Thanks to you all again for the great advice!

I agree that it looks like moisture damage, but what do you mean exactly when you say it appears "between frames"? That almost sounds like a camera issue if the problem occurs in a certain rhythm with the frames.

Oh not at all. The marks are not only on the individual frames but extend across areas of film that should not have been exposed to light so it would suggest it's more likely a developing issue or, as it turns out, moisture damage.
