I always leave some of the leader sticking out from the cassette, but if you don't, what's wrong with a standard bottle opener?

Bottle openers work but usually not without some permanent damage to the canister. This is great for people who want to reuse and not bend their canisters or end caps.

I did not realise you could reuse normal film cassettes.

Not all can be but some. I reuse my Shantou ERA 100 canisters all the time as they pop off easily with one of these film openers.
