film availability in Erfurt Germany

This is a note to myself and to the benefit of others. I ran low on film and bought Delta 100 & 400 in 120 rolfilm at Foto Siegl in Erfurt Germany. They had Ilford Delta 100, Delta 400, FP4 and HP5 in stock, both in 120 and 135. Prices were reasonable, a bit more expensive than the German online shops. But I was happy that I could just walk to the store and buy more film.

That looks fine. But then tell me : How was the avaibility of Orwo Films in the very past if you can remember? Was it better like with Ilford Films today...?

I remember a story of an East German based photographer who told me he was during all the time shooting on Ilford and only intermediately he got problems and shot with Orwo. He told me Orwo was also a very good emulsion!
But he have had a special source to come to Ilford (only HP5 if I remember correct).
Since then I asked me what was his source? Who knows ?
From were he got his Ilford Films (obviously for less)???
Have you made experience with Ilford material within the 80th?
All I heared from others was the folowing : Ilford Films were extrem hard to get sometimes the same with Orwo (temporaryly)????

I never used Orwo film. I've always used Ilford B&W film. I grew up in the Netherlands and Ilford film FP4 & HP5 was easy to get and not too expensive around 1980 when I started to develop and print in the high school darkroom. I recall a class mate (occasionally?) using Orwo film but I don't know how readily available it was. After I finished high school, I didn't have access to a darkroom anymore and stopped using B&W film for the remainder of the 20th century. Now I'm using Delta 100 and 400 and I'm happy with that.

I would say - then you are a lucky guy (growing up in the Netherlands) ......and not in Eastern Germany during cold war.....

but I guess indeed hart time during cold war especialy to get Ilford original films
