My condolences Umut, I'm sorry to hear about your mother. I think the others who mentioned the Mediterranean coast may have a good idea, not such a far move while you think more about where you'd like to live.

Oh, and Seychelles, not if you don't want to become a lobster.

The Hagia Sophia is glorious. Istanbul is a wonderful city. And since last names go first, you are all calling him by his last name. He is properly called Umut.

Thank you all,

I am considering Fiji - hotel 2.5 dollars per night - or Darjeeling India. I want to get a new university degree on it or rotogravure printing operator. Darjeeling is in north india , very high and air is very clean , british forces holiday place. And its colder , grows some of the best tea in the world , wonderful place. Fij, can be good or torture , I dont know. There are flights for 800 dollars. And I am thinking Brazil. Well everything will be clear in few months. I think there was a typhoon in fiji last month and everything demolished.
I learned universities at brazil are ultra expensive and all are for rich people. I love Argentina and Chile Peru also.

With the level of your posts I'd suggest you go for a physics or optical sciences degree. University of Arizona - Tuscon. Try for a scholarship or grant.

Thank you for your kind words. I am thinking to go to Israel for physics also but I dont know how their visa regime works. I have many jewish family friends and they are very kind people. Umut, I'm sorry about your mother. At such times of crisis in one's life, it is all too easy to consider escaping, fleeing to anywhere, just to be away from the sorrow and unhappiness you must be feeling. I write as one who did this, many years ago. I chose Australia. A good place. In the 1970s it was a small slice of earthly paradise, somewhat changed now, stupid politics and greedy business have done untold damage over the decades. But still, in most ways, a good place. I have never regretted my choice made 40 years ago.
Google it and see for yourself. Heaps of good information on the 'net for you.
Thinking in common sense terms, I particularly consider the advice of wy21 and georg1nik to be spot on. Many others also. A few nits. If someone won't live somewhere, why on earth would they advise you to?
If I was in your situation, I would do this. Batten down the emotional hatches, stay put for six months to a year. You will need at least the former to fix up all the loose ends, financial and legal, anyway. Make a new life plan and a financial plan and start to work on it. Trim down your possessions to those who want to keep, the basics only. Don't dispose of anything photographic at first.
North America is in NO WAY what you believe it is. Yes, there are pockets of wildness, poverty, despair, violence. Also many places without. At my age, I won't relocate, not in this lifetime, but if I were faced with making another choice, I would opt for New Mexico. A stunning place. Unique in everything.
Avoid corrupt Asian or Pacific countries. My recent decision, to spend time living in Asian places I first visited in the '70s, has opened my eyes to the realities of trying to establish a new life in an Asian environment. Without careful planning, you can easily end up at the mercy of two month visas, and corruption when you try to renew your visas, or flying out to places like Singapore or Malaysia for short stays, then back to your chosen Asian destination, to start the process all over again. Three day visits to Singapore are expensive, and the excitement quickly fades.
You have a lot of choice but you need a clear mind and balanced emotions to make a decision that is best for you in the long term.
I think you already live in a beautiful country. I have many Turkish friends in Australia, and have visited Turkey several times.
Is there somewhere in Turkey you would be happy relocating to and making a new start in? Much cheaper for you, and less emotional stress from the need to readjust to a new culture.
You feel sad now, but remember, you have the luxury of choice, and there has never been a better time in this world to relocate and make a new start.
Meantimes, keep photographing!
All the very best to you in your future decision making. I trust you will make a good choice, and find happiness.

Umut,

I understand about you wanting to live as close to your country as possible. One other point for consideration is that there are Turkish communities at many American universities..even at the small engineering college I went to. So while it would not be close to home, you would have fellow countrymen (and women) to be homesick with.

It may also be easier to get an American visa to attend a college than an Israeli visa..but of course I cannot say for sure. In any case, the key for you I think would be to obtain a grant or scholarship (my family was very poor growing up and obtaining a scholarship at the right time was my way up out of poverty). If you go into physics then there are many, many universities and colleges to investigate.

Good luck.. you and your family are in my thoughts and prayers.

Umut, almost a year has passed. How are you? Where are you now?
Have you relocated? Did you decide to stay in your own country and rebuild your life there?
Please do not leave us in suspense. To do so would be like processing a film but omitting to fix it. No-one would dare to remove it from the tank. You would never know what images were on those negatives.
Did you consider Australia? New Zealand?
I have moved ahead quite a lot in my own life in the past year.
A visit, for a holiday, to Malaysia may open your eyes to an entirely new life for you.
With my very best regards,
oz

If you think Istanbul is expensive, wait till you get into ritzy Singapore! Or Abu Dubai. Neither place has ever heard of the word "pension".

But there is a bigger question: where is the money going to come from for this new sea-change? The Seychelles and the Maldives are beautiful, exotic and EXPENSIVE. If you're into diving, sailing, SUPing, island-hopping, eating, lazing around... go there, but take heaps of money. But I generally don't think you'd get permanent residency anywhere near there. Broaden your horizons by looking at places like Germany or even the USA.

Hello Friends,

Thank you for remembering me. My sister came from paris 10 months ago and fighted with system and got me two pensions , one of the best health security and I am living in istanbul bosphorus - google earth it - and spending 1600 dollars a month to a small room in sea side. I am watching and painting all the sea traffic from amsterdam to med and med to amsterdam. I am watching the sea from 7, meters to 1.5 meters window. My sister could get me a permanent residency from france but I did not want it. I think if I move the house again , I select argentina or other south american jewel . I got 10 years visa from usa , 20 years ago but I did not want to go later. I love spanish speaking people and tango music. I think I have couple of years to reconsider to move again. Thanks.

There may soon be visa-free travel to Europe for Turkish passport holders. It is unclear how that affects rights to work, but living and studying in Germany would become possible at relatively little cost. Romania might also be interesting for you, concerning cost of living and study possibilities. Good luck with your plans.

I am British and soon the UK will be leaving the European Union so I will be having the opposite visa problem! Most likely I will have to pay regularly for the work-permit to work in the Netherlands, as I did when I first came here.

Sorry for the loss of your mom, Umut.

I realize you said the US is out, but it can be inexpensive if you live in a small town. I live in a small town near Peoria, Illinois in the US. Far enough away that house prices are reasonable, but close enough to bigger towns and Peoria, Bloomington, and Normal, Illinois that shopping is convenient.

I work in Springfield, and they have a nice camera store there that sells some film. If they don't have it, I can order online from Adorama or B&H and have it in two business days.

Before moving across the globe, you might consider staying in Turkey, but move out to a small town instead of staying in Istanbul, where if I recall correctly, you said it's too expensive. I'm just thinking that there are ways to move that would cut expenses but yet keep options open. There are small towns all over the world close to small cities like Peoria and Bloomington-Normal so housing expenses are less since you're not in the city, yet shopping for necessities is convenient.

For example, I am friends with an MD here in the US who retired to Pagudpud, Ilocos Norte, Philippines. Someplace like that might also be an option - small town, on the coast, decent climate (except for the occasional typhoon). Being on the Pacific Rim, though, it does get earthquakes.

Old timers say , two languages makes two persons in your mind. I think if I was was free , I prefer to go to belgium to learn marollian , flamish , dutch , german and french in couple of years and return to my home here. I would buy lots of books also. Thats all , or visit belgium for 4th to 10th months to learn language and stay at istanbul for winter. Let me think about it.

Umut, if I were you, I would go to France in a nanosecond. It is one of the world's great cultures. Much of it is changing, very fast, but it is still wonderful. Most other places in the world, aren't. Australia, where I moved forty years ago, is now in a loss/loss situation. Nice climate, nothing else going for it. Death wish territory. Being destroyed by its own.

Also Malaysia. A Muslim culture, a truly civilised society. What's more, unlike Australia, they are taking active steps to keep it that way. Intelligent people, who think there is more to life than going to the beach or to the pub.

With a pension (I hope, fixed and indexed, the world is truly your oyster. Grab that pearl while you can. Unless of course, you are so attached to Turkey, that you really don't want to leave...?

Cheerio.
