I have a Fed2. I have never used a Leica lens but have read that there may be a slight difference in the mating of the lens and RF cam. So it will mount and will focus, but perhaps not precisely. DOF may cover the discrepancy. I'm not sure on this but worth some investigation.
I have read that there were some problems with early Soviet Leica copies which were 39mm by 1mm thread pitch. The Leica was 39mm by 26 threads per inch... close, but not identical. It appears that the problem was ironed out and later cameras and lenses in 39mm thread mount were more compatible. Here is a thread with some insight into the subject:
The point I was making (and it may not be correct at all) had nothing to do with the mounting threads. The last paragraph in the last post in the kyphoto thread (by John Silver) addresses - I think - the issue to which I was referring.
I understand mgb74. I had forgotten about the cam issue, and was not thinking of it when I wrote the post above. Does mgb74 refer to a car you have? I had a TR8 in the late 70s. Everything that went wrong with it had the word Lucas on it. The only serious problem it had was that it was not made in Japan.
Most Leica (and other LTM) lenses will fit and remove ok and will rangefind ok.
Some will foul the rangefinder cam on the Fed 2, and will not mount properly or remove after you try to mount.
For example the Hector f/4.5 135mm and Summicron f/2 90mm will jam on unless you are lucky from memory. The Russian lenses are cheaper and all will work - again from memory.
