Ferrania Orto Development question

Hello,

I have a couple rolls of Ferrania Orto 35 mm I need to develop. I have a developing tank with 35 mm reels. I found the following recommendation from the Ferrania website for HC-110

Developer : HC 110 Dilution G​

DILUTION 1:119, TEMP. 20ºC/68ºF, EI 50/18 (MINUTES) 30-45, EI 64/19 (MINUTES) -, PROCEDURE : Stand: This is for normal to low contast scenes. EI 50. 5 minute prewet at temp. Agitation 1st minute, one inversion each 5 seconds. Stand for remainder of time. Ideal for Scanning.

I'm not sure what they mean by "EI 50/18 (MINUTES) 30-45, EI 64/19 (MINUTES)"

Anyone have any ideas/experience with developing this film?

I interpret that to mean:

If you shoot it at EI 50, process for 18 min.
If you shoot it at EI 64, process it for 19 min.

1st minute, frequent agitation.
Let stand for the remaining time.

That's pretty short for stand development with such highly dilute developer...but that's what the manufacturers recommend, so test one roll & see if it works for you.

I just noticed that they recommend HC110 @1:119.... be sure to check whether that's the ratio of syrup to water, or stock solution to water.
BIG DIFFERENCE!

I am pretty sure that EI 50/18 means, ISO 50 = DIN 18 for 30-45 minutes.
ISO64 = DIN19 but the minutes for some reason are not given.

Do not stand develop for 18 or 19 minutes only.

Yes, that is how I would read it.

I had a look at the website and in other developers, they have omitted the number of minutes in some of the EI 64/19 listing. (confusing to say the least)

In the HC 110 they do say stand for the remainder of the time, 30-45 minutes.

"Agitation 1st minute, one inversion each 5 seconds. Stand for remainder of time. Ideal for Scanning."

Shoot it at EI 32 for better shadow rendtion, especially if you stand develop. It's an excellent film, with slightly more contrast than Ilford's Ortho 80.

Agreed. I got excellent results exposing at 25-32 ASA and developing with the Thornton 2-Bath developer (It's similar to Divided D-23). It's a great film. I look forward to the 120 format.

I've also been developing it in Thornton 2-Bath. I'm waiting to get my hands on some 120!

So in effect stand development for say 18-19 mins. Yes this does seem strange based on what seems to be the general view of what stand dev normally consists of in terms of time

I wonder: 1. Has Ferrania actually tried this and if so it would appear that (a) it works and a 1 minute agitation at the start develops the film OK and prevents any bromide drag?

Based on this it may be that letting it sit for a total of 17-18 mins is fine at preventing bromide drag. Would 1 minute's reasonably vigorous agitation at the start be enough to prevent drag were it to be left entirely for an hour's development?

It generates more questions than it provides answers

The actual development time given for EI 50/DIN 18 is 30 to 45 minutes or 30min. is for the former EI 50 and 45 is for the latter EI 64.

I haven't been to the Ferrania website to see if that's a text formatting issue or not, I just want to be sure the EI/DIN isn't confused with developing times.

The text on the site, for the developers, is poorly laid out, which I think is causing the confusion.

Thanks for catching the "30 to 45 minutes" ...I somehow overlooked that.

This is what I've been doing with P30, but I do need to try it with the Ortho. I've been shooting it at 50 and it's been stellar in BTTB
