I've been using a lot of Kentmere Bromide grade 2 this summer. The blacks are amazingly deep, and look fine without toning. It may be my developer, but I've always found the Ilford Multigrade's blacks a little weak without selenium toner. I also like the ease and speed of using graded paper.

I was a long-time user of Forte until they died, then replaced it with Ilford Warmtone FB. I don't like it as much in its new incarnation, though, so will probably go back to Kentmere, which I tried when Forte died but ended up with Ilford because it was easier for me to get as the local shop carried it. I absolutely adore Ilfrod Galerie when I can afford it, but that isn't very often any more. I was thinking of trying Foma for a warm tone paper.

Mike,

If you want to give Foma a go you might like to try their new Fomatone MG Classic II, Nature 532 (thats if it's available in the States). It's a matt surface with a very fine sheen almost like Ilford's RC pearl. The paper is very warm in Ilford's WT developer. In fact I found it so warm I had to cool it down by using some of Ilford's Cooltone developer in the mix.

Regards,

Trevor.

I'm getting ready to place an order with Freestyle, and I think that some Foma paper will be on the list to try. I've pretty much settled on Dektol or Selectol Soft as my paper developers; we'll see what they do in these. Thanks for the recommendation!

Silverprint are saying they have bought the last remaining stocks of Galerie Gd 4 and that there are 'special prices on the other grades'
I think this may indicate our fears.

Anyone else know anything ?

Sorry, just looked at their website again and it doesnt say special prices on other grades, only the grade 4.
I'm still a bit confused though.

Trevor,

Are you sure that is true? Silverprint's website states that grade 4 is being discontinued, but still lists grades 2 and 3 without additional comment.

Tom.

Tom,

Sorry, I think you may be right that at this time only grade 4 is being discontinued. However a friend did inform me that Galerie was to be discontinued. I'll have to contact him re. his source.

Perhaps Simon Galley can clarify this matter.

Regards,
Trevor.

PS. It appears only grade 4 and Matt finish is/are to be discontinued.

I've been using Calumet's Brilliant. I think its made for them somewhere in the UK so you can most likely source it locally.

Emaks - can't wait!

I just received some Emaks 11x14 #2 from Freestyle - I have heard good things about it - can't wait to try.

Also, here's an up for the Ilford Warmtone - its mighty pretty stuff.

Bill, if you liked the old Agfa and Forte, the closest you're going to get is the Fomatone MG Classic 131. It's a wonderful paper. I use it all the time along with:
- Ilford MGWT - nice creamy smooth paper with a fantastic grayscale
- Fotokemika Emaks Grades 2-4 - I love this paper, it's remarkable with its long tonal scale
- Fotokemika Varycon fiber - slightly colder in tone than Emaks but VC and likes diluted developers and long development times
- Kentmere Fineprint VC - punchy and rich fat blacks with very crisp highs. Very nice paper. Neutral tone.
- Ilford MGIV - As neutral as it gets. Dependable, great for sepia toning
- Some odd expired papers for lith printing, not worth mentioning here.
It's all about what you're after.
- Thomas

Thanks for that Simon; ILFORD Galerie G2 is a wonderful paper. Since it's also quite flexible in terms of contrast with different developers, I haven't really seen a need for G4. Or maybe it's G3 I haven't seen the need for, since G2 is easily processed to anything from 1/2 to 3 1/2?
