Dr Phil started off mentioning two color photographers. I thought he missed some really good ones. this is APUG; it's a warm nurturing environment and you're allowed to be slightly disfunctional here.

Stephen Shore, Joel Sternfeld (I'm looking at American Prospects right now), Beahan and McPhee (does this sound like a familiar list?)... and most of the others that come to mind immediately are MF, I think. Wim Wenders, Harry Callahan...

While I don't own it, I remember seeing a book about the Glen Canyon before the dam was built. Maybe it was Elliot Porter? It was a wonderful color landscape book. That is one i would like to have but i don't know if it is still in print.

William Henry Jackson, Given the time he worked in and the equip,emt he had, he did remarkable work. His were the photographs that influenced the congress critters to creat Yellowstone National Park.

I forgot about Bradford Washburn. I used his photographs when I climbed Denali. They were more useful than the USGS maps.

Jim, Good Choice..'The Place No One Knew' by Elliot Porter is an all time fav of mine. Actually saw a copy at Andrew Smith in SF a few years ago. It is available today, not sure what printing and think it is only in paper back. The Amon Carter is a repository for his work, so there has been a great deal of it shown there. No, I don't have this one either, but do have a couple of Porters other work...really good stuff.

Excellent choices!!! Have you seen Hart Island by Sternfeld? It's beautiful and very moving.

Yes. I am retired and taking photography courses at Akron (Ohio) University. Lois came from her teaching job at Princeton for three days on a grant last March. She spoke to a large audience at the Meyers Art school about her work and gave a two day introductory platinum printing workshop for 12 students. I was lucky enough to win a seat there. At several points she showed her work including the original platinum photos used for the book "China"

Lois's visit motivated me to take a five day platinum printing workshop with Bob Herbst last August and buy what my wife refers to as way too much equipment.

Lois's platinum printing grant was followed this month by a visit to Akron U by Andrea Modica. She came to town, lectured, critiqued the advanced student's work, gave us an assignment and returned two weeks later to critique the assignment. On the second visit she brought a 6 stack of originals from her six books. Both she and Lois sell their work at about $2,000 a print.

I won't be doing a bicycle and banquet camera in the mountains, but I am starting to use an 8x10 and a baby jogger with 20" wheels and shock absorbers in the national parks here in Ohio and in the mountains of West Virginia. I have the happiest Labrador Retriever in the world because every photo venture is a race in the woods and streams for her.
