Hi
What are your favorites. Neme your favorite product/portrait studio photographer in each decade, like 2010th, 2000th, 1990th, 80th till 1920th, but pick only one per decade.

My favorite portraits phot. for 2000th is Howard Schatz , because of his H2O project.
My favorite portraits phot. for 90th is David Lachapelle, because of his Hotel Lachapelle project.

For product photographers, it's a challenge for me to pick only one for decade, there are so many talents.
I will go with extremes. I pick Karl Bossfeldt for 10th and 20th (from 1900) for his macro plants still life work.
I pick Harold Feinstein for 2000ths, for his seashells, foliage, flowers still life work. But it's not really commercial product photography, more fine art like all others i mentioned.

For 90th hard to pick one, as some photographers where doing great stuff over some decades, like Albert Watson, Gregory Heisler and Dan Winters but if I have to pick one for 90th, it will be not portrait, but more fine art/portrait photographer Gregory Crewdson for his twilight project in 90th(1998-2002).

As for product photographers, hard to pick one, maybe Olle Bengtson or Peter Lippmann or Jonathan Knowls, but it's only for 2010th, but hard to pick ones from 80th or 70th for example, or even earlier that did it as commercial photographers. I can mention earlier ones like Lafont from 1977 that did commercial job for photographing machine guns for Hotchkiss company. Some commercial product portraits photographers from 40th mentioned here. And some did commercial photography for soap company and for toothpaste here. For 1936 Auburn Automobile Company Advertisement was run with a car, but no photographer mentioned link to article.

For 2000th, i think the icing on the cake is Belgian Crhistophe Gilbert, but again, not so commercial portraits as more fine art. I assume he is also no longer active and his website doesn't work well. Another source of his works

2 good product photographers I know but are no longer active as I know, is one conceptual Dave Nitsche 2010th, and another liquid commercial photographer from 2010th Bill Cahill.

From my own perspective, it's very easy to find some great photographer from later years than from 50 years ago. Also, surprisingly, it's much easier to find some good fine art photographer, than commercial photographer. Each time I think of some one, it's more in arts category, than in commercial category.

In case you have some favs from early 20th and on, especially in products, which will surprise me, It will be interesting to know their names or link to their works on some public domains.

So now is your turn, 1 per decade, a hard task as I can see it. Please mention a decade to which this photoraphers work relate. If it's for some decades, like albert watson, pick "the best decade".

There are too many to consider, too few that merit consideration. In my mind neither Howard Schatz nor David Lachapelle are portrait photographers. And Mr. Gilbert's oeuvre seems to be pretty standard, run-of-the-mill commercial work, uneven at that. I probably wouldn't have hired him when I was working as an art director. Each decade has a number of styles of the times, mostly dating them, many looking stale by now.

I see your points. Can't agree about Gilbert, but we have different opinions. Yes, Howard and David are not portraits photographers, but they do portraits, in their style. I probably say they are fine art portrait photographers, as long as they photograph people.
But Pieter, you didn't answer the toughest question, what are your favorites. It's easy to say "There are too many to consider, too few that merit consideration.". It's harder to pick some, and that's what I'm interested for.(favorites is key word in my thread)
