Hi everyone, first time poster - I am wondering if anyone can help me with my FastFoto scanner and the fact it is making strange lines appear on the images, to the point of being unusable. I have attached a quick random photo below to just give a demonstration of this. I wonder if there is an issue with the glass or if it needs servicing or the glass needs replacing but hopefully someone will know what to do?!

Thank you for your time!

Are you referring to the very thin vertical lines (look like very straight scratches)?
Two things that might help:
Are they running in the scanning direction?
Are they running in the film transport (in the camera) direction?
What format film?

Welcome aboard!

Just to verify that it's really a scanning problem: the line is not visible on the actual prints, correct?

You've included a photo of the scanner and a bit that's circled, but I'm not sure what we're looking at. Is there a possibility of a closeup of that section that shows an anomaly (provided you spotted one)?

Thank you for your reply. Yes I am referring to the vertical scratch-like lines.

So I'm running the photos through upside down facing forwards so when the digitised version comes through, it's the right way up.
It's not film, it's prints. It seems like the lines are coming from an issue with the scanner which I have tried to capture a better image of where I feel like they are being caused in the scanner - it seems that they correspond with the artefacts on the scans.

Hi, thanks for your message. I have attempted to get a better photo here where I feel like they are being caused in the scanner - it seems that they correspond with the artefacts on the scans. I am not entirely sure what to do, whether a part can be changed or if it can be cleaned etc.?
The machine has been used a LOT over the years.

Thanks for following up on this.
It's this scratch on the glass, right:

If so, I suspect it's cause by a piece of sand/grit that was stuck to a print and then fed through the scanner, scratching the glass in the process.
You might be able to get a replacement piece of glass from a broken scanner that you use for parts. Frankly, I suspect the odds of finding a similar replacement scanner in working order might be even easier and not necessarily more expensive.
As a last resort, you could try and contact a company that cuts custom-sized pieces of glass and see if they can make a replacement. However, I consider this a last resort since the original glass most likely has an optical coating and using plain glass without such a coating will likely result in reduced contrast and perhaps flare artefacts. It may also be challenging to fit a replacement piece of glass in the scanner, depending on how it's mounted.

Sorry to not be of too much help other than acknowledging the problem!

PS: one more last-resort measure would be to try and fill the scratch with something like India ink and see if that improves matters. It may cut down the stray reflections that the scratch causes, making it less apparent in the scans.

Would something like this, work on the scanner glass?
