I got permission from Koraks last time around, so hopefully I'm not overstepping posting here again.

The Fall 2024 Reddit Print Exchange sign ups are open for most of this month. You can read about it and sign up here!

No, you don't need to have a Reddit account or a be a Reddit user to join the print exchange. I just started hosting it there a couple of times a year back in 2022, so the name stuck. Please feel free to join us! You can ask any questions you may have here and I'll do my best to answer.

By all means! Please take the floor.

Could you please cute the instructions here as well? Reddit doesn't allow me to read the content on their page without signing in, because it's "not reviewed".

Here is the Reddit post about this exchange, which I linked to above:

Welcome one and all! Pumpkin spice season is nearly upon us, and what better way to celebrate than sending artistic photos to internet strangers? No, not like that, you pervert.
If you've done this before, you pretty much know the drill. If you haven't, I strongly suspect everything you need to know is included in the FAQ. But please feel free to comment here or DM me if your questions aren't frequently asked.
But for our newcomers, the elevator pitch is: You get randomly assigned to mail a print to someone (or more than one person if you want), and you will also receive a print in the mail from someone. It's fun!
Key dates for this exchange:
  • September 1: Exchange sign-ups open
  • September 24: Exchange sign-ups close
  • September 25: "Last chance to back out" emails go out
  • September 29: Random assignments are made and distributed via email
  • November 9: Deadline for getting your print(s) in the mail to your recipient(s). Note that this is a shorter mailing window than we did in Spring 2024, so plan accordingly! And... get everything sent well before November 9th, yeah? Can we all agree that's a good plan?
  • November 19: Sticky thread opens for people to report missing prints, and emails go out to people who signed up as volunteers, to make sure they're still up for it
  • November 30: Window to report missing prints closes, and thread is locked
  • December 1: Volunteer assignments are randomly generated and distributed via email

Also... invite all your friends and/or family! Invite your therapist! Invite your dog. No need to be a Reddit user to sign up; there is room in the kingdom for all types.

And here is our FAQ, since I usually run a Fall and a Spring exchange every year:

Papa, what is a print exchange?

Since the dawn of time, humankind has been merely posting photos to Instagram, or letting them live out life unseen, alone, on dusty old hard drives. Never to see the light of day, or even the inner workings of the United States Postal Service.

I aim to correct this injustice for the first time in human history, by encouraging photographers to print their work! With this new technology of physical media to display art, we will together usher in a new and golden age of prosperity.

Join our ranks! Choose how many people you want to send prints to, be it one or threescore. The same number of people will *ahem*, theoretically send you prints as well.

Who can participate?

Anyone in the world who can send and receive photos in the mail is welcome to participate. If you are not able to send mail internationally, please don't sign up.

Aw man, I missed it! When is the next one?

I'm pretty good about running an exchange in the spring and one in the fall every year. Keep an eye on r/printexchange for sign-ups usually around the start of March and September.

What kinds of photos are allowed?

Any size, genre, and (photographic) medium is allowed for this exchange! This includes digital, film, inkjet, darkroom, alt process, instant film, etc. etc. I have not yet received a cibachrome from one of these exchanges, and my disappointment is immeasurable.

If you want to send a photo that is even remotely NSFW, please reach out to and contact your recipient on Reddit or via email to check with them first. Think of the children!

Can I send stuff besides prints?

I think it's great to include a letter or a note. A lot of people like to include stickers or other goodies. None of that is required though.

I strongly encourage you to send your prints to international recipients as "letters" or "documents" rather than "packages." Not only does this keep shipping costs down for you as the sender, it also minimizes the chances that your recipient will have to pay a VAT or customs fee to claim your prints.

Will I be sending to the same person/people I am receiving from?

Probably not, although there is nothing in the script I use to shuffle assignments that specifically prevents this from happening.

How are you handling my personal information?

Email Addresses: Your email address will not be shared with anyone without your permission. You can opt-in during sign up if you're okay with sharing it with your senders and recipients. That makes it easier for them to reach out if they need to get in contact with you (since I'm told not everybody spends unhealthy amounts of time on Reddit like I do).

Names: Your "mailing name" will not be made public, but it will be shared privately with every person who is assigned to mail you a print. This includes volunteers sending extra/makeup prints at the tail end of an exchange when applicable. It will also be shared with any person to whom you are assigned to send a print.

Mailing Addresses: Your address will not be made public, but it will be shared privately with every person who is assigned to mail you a print.

Usernames: Your username is already public. I dunno what you want from me.

What if I don't get all my prints?

We have volunteers to help out when this happens (and you can sign up to be a member of this elite group if you think you have what it takes). Shortly after the deadline for each exchange, I'll put up a sticky post on r/printexchange where people can report if they're missing prints. Once I think I've collected the list of people who got stiffed, I'll make a round of "volunteer assignments" to fill those gaps in to the best of my ability.

I filled out the form, but I'm not on Reddit. So if you could post updates here as well, I would be much obliged.
Thanks,

I"ll do my best to keep things updated here. So far we have 76 confirmed participants from 12 countries, and another 31 participants still pending confirmation. Based on the trajectory, I wouldn't be surprised if we have upwards of 150 confirmed exchange participants by the time the sign-up window closes  Glad to have you @TheToadMen

Yeah I was really surprised when I started running these in 2022 how much appetite there was for exchanging prints in the various photography-related subreddit communities. And the participants that sign up have historically skewed pretty hard towards film shooters more so than digital.

FYI we are up to 107 confirmed participants from 20 countries, with another 20 still pending confirmation.

@TheToadMen, you are one of the 20 still pending confirmation  Check your email and get back to me so I can finalize your sign-up!

I've replied to your email, thanks for the reminder

Well I'm well past my previous all-time record for participation. We're now up to 177 confirmed participants from 22 countries. There are enough participants pending confirmation at this point, that I wouldn't be surprised if we actually make it past 200 confirmed participants in this round of the exchange!

Wow, that's amazing.

question: since there are so many participants, is it possible to match people living in the same continent? This will keep the shippings costs more acceptable and it will shorten shipping times

If only the blind print exchange here could get more than 10 participants....

The PCX has already done that.

I'm aware - and one of the people who encouraged that it did that. But it's pretty clear that the print exchange here would have even fewer participants if it accepted hybrid prints.

@TheToadMen - as of right now, there is nothing in place to try and minimize postal costs for anyone when making assignments. You're not the first person to ask

In the future, I may try to upgrade my assignment generating algorithm, so that participants can express a preference for mailing to their own country/continent or similar if desired. Not sure whether I'd ever be able to hit a point where you're guaranteed not to have to mail overseas. We have primarily North American participants, with plenty of European, and very little representation from Africa, Asia, Australia, or South America.

By way of update - sign-ups are now closed. We have 199 confirmed participants in 23 countries, with 12 of them still pending. It seems this is the first time I'll ever pass the 200 mark on this exchange!

Tomorrow I will send out emails to give people a chance to withdraw before I make assignments. With whoever is left on 9/29, I will generate and distribute exchange assignments via email, and we're off to the races!

Assignments have been randomly generated and emailed out!

Please let me know if you can't find yours (in your inbox or possibly your spam folder). The subject line should be "Fall 2024 Reddit Print Exchange Assignments"

I received mine. As soon as I’ve had the aquired tattoo made, I’ll post my prints to France and Germany next week.

Not much by way of update, but things are in full swing, with numerous participants posting that they have mailed their prints. I expect to see the "thank you" posts start cropping up en masse soon.

I've sent to 3 of my 6 recipients, and have last night's fiber prints sitting in the hot mount press getting flat now. Once they're out I can send the last 3 envelopes.

Please don't hesitate to post here when you send your prints or receive some!

I've added a reference to Reddit to the thread title. It makes it easier to distinguish here (on Photrio) between the various exchanges, and perhaps it might drive a bit more participation in the exchange itself - which is already very impressive.

Cool cool. I'd love to have more Photrio members joining this exchange. There are some pretty great artists on Reddit of course, and I've gotten a fair number of very cool prints from the times I've run this exchange. But the user base there skews pretty young, and I suspect more participation from here would mean more darkroom prints in the mix, which by my estimation can only be a good thing
