Hi,

So I notice that when I stop down on my lens, the viewfinder darkens. What could this be? Something to do with depth of field preview? It is a bit annoying. The lens is not native. It is a minolta lens on an adapter if that makes any difference. The camera can meter and works in manual mode.

The adaptor does not allow the normal open aperture metering and shooting. You're using the lens in what's known as stop down mode.

You can use aperture preferred auto exposure mode too.

Thanks Frank. So aperture priority does work on the camera. F is reading -- on the camera but when I change the aperture ring on the lens, the shutter changes also to accommodate it. I assume this is OK then. The pictures will come out ''properly exposed''. I read an easy method about focusing. Focus with the aperture wide open cause it is brightest and then stop down if needed.

Adapters always introduce issues of this nature, native lenses do not.

Just focus wide open, then stop that sucker down. W/ an AE camera, it's amazingly fast to do this and get correct exposure. If you need to customize the exposure for a shot, just use the AE lock.
