F80 film loading problem

I just unloaded a cartridge from my F80, went to load a new one, and the batteries died (which wasn't a surprise). Put new batteries and the new film in, turned in on, and get a flashing "err" and "E". The book tells me that the film isn't loaded properly. I've tried it a few times, different cartridges, and still get the same message. Never had this problem (or any other) with this camera, in the 8 or so years I've had it. Any hints gratefully accepted.

Could the problem be in the aperture ring.Was it moved out of auto focus mode?

No, it's on "S", but thanks for the suggestion.

Just checked out my notes (analog all the way) and the only solution I could find was #!.Pull the film leader beyond the red index mark. #2.Make sure your lens is set to the smallest aperture.

Hi,

Do you have the custom setting 8 in 8.0 or 8.1?

Because if in 8.0, the film will advance to frame 1 as you close the back door, if in 8.1, as you close the door, only after you press the shutter once, the film will advance to frame 1.

Let´s hope it's only that and not a broken transport mechanism.

Thanks Andre, but I've always had it in 8.0. I can't check because the camera won't do anything except flash the error and E.
The transport roller is free-wheeling right now. I'm not sure if that's normal or if I should be able to feel some resistance from the motor. Maybe the motor kicks in when the door is shut.

Could the film contacts be dirty? Clean them with some rubbing alcohol on a Q-tip (careful not to use too much).Fresh batteries?
Just a suggestion.

I had a similar problem with my N80 -- the batteries died during rewind. I was able to manually remove the film (in the dark!). But, after putting fresh batteries in, it just wouldn't load, and always went into "Err" state. I had to take it into my local camera repair place, and they were able to reset it. Even forcing a rewind didn't help. Good luck!

All I can report is that when I tried to use the camera as a meter without film it it I got that same ERR. I had to put a roll in it to use it. Just off the top of my head set the ISO manually regardless if there is a readout on the LCD. IF the electronics aren't working to pickup the ISO, selecting it manually might work?

No, "It does not compute" that's the new technology, the tail wagging the bloody dog, you may call me a Luddite but at least with the the old manual cameras you could get the film in and out.

"With some exceptions", according to the book. This is obviously one of them. I'll take the camera into a repair place next time I'm in a place that has one and hope it's something simple. In the meantime, I've used this as an excuse to buy PhotoBulley's F100 from the classifieds.

Try this: Remove the batteries. Let the camera sit for about 15 minutes. Then, load a roll of film normally without the batteries. Close the door. Insert fresh batteries. If nothing happens, flick the back door switch. If that fails, press the forced rewind buttons. If that fails, I'm out of suggestions.

What Karl said.Occassionally my 8008s hangs up,and this clears it. Another trick is to bridge the battery contacts in the body with something conductive; a pair of scissors for example.My handbook claims static electricity is the problem.

Thanks for the hints Karl and Smudger. I tried both - first Karl's, then the scissors, but I still get the Err message. Possibly it's my karma. As I was trying these ideas, I was wondering how to tell my wife I have a perfectly good F80 and a new F100

what did I just say ?, I just shot the last exposure on the roll on my Canon T90 on the self timer, and when it started to rewind,the bloody motor drive just ripped the film out of the cassette and wound it round the take-up spool, where the hell did I put my changing bag ?
