hello

I just purchased a used S-18 extension tube for my SQ-Ai. When I shake the tube it rattles like there is something loose inside. All you S-18 owners out there: IS THIS NORMAL? It is also very difficult to remove the tube from the lens. the sliding button is quite stiff. I'm thinking I should return it.

thanks david

The obvious solution to your problem is not to shake the tube. :D

If it's any consolation, my g-36 does the same. I always just assumed it was part of the aperture linkage... something that floated free until it has tension placed upon it. Maybe someone with more experience can correct me. I can't see that it has any effect on its function, though. In fact, I am blown away by the quality of the negatives with this extension.

Cheers,

that's reassuring, thanks

thanks Tom. that's reassuring to hear. It seems to work o.k. but when one hears a rattle in any sort of equipment, it makes one a little nervous! Especially, as I bought this online from a camera store and it was sent here. I don't really want to send it back as these extension tubes are getting harder to find.

cheers

Yep, thats the linkage rattling inside and it does tighten up when the lens is bayonetted onto it. They are pretty tough pieces of equipment.

David, you may well know all about this already, but there is a thing called the Bronica lock-up that affects the removal of extension tubes. It's described at the link below along with a couple of other SQ Tips.

thanks guys. the link with SQ tips is very good to know about. I'm relieved that my new S-18 is fine. Although, the release knob is still fairly stiff even when the release levers are directly below the green dot on the lens mount. Actually, I have to hold one of the levers (against the spring tension) while I slide the release knob. But it works o.k. as long as I don't have to do it in hurry!

thanks for your help,
david
