Expired TMax 400

I have 2 rolls of this stuff. Was told it was frozen until the freezer died then I bought it. So maybe a few days out of cold storage before I returned it to the freezer. It's been 3-4 years I've had it and no idea how expired it is. Grabbed a roll for my F5 and went to load it. The exposed leader is a dull color that doesn't match the film pulled from the canister to load it. Ahyhow a little help with EI would be appreciated.


I'll be developing this in FA-1027 @ 9+1. Any ideas on speed to shoot it at as well as time in the developer? MasDevChart says 400 for 8 minutes at 20C. Just shoot box and develop like that? It's not going to be anything special just some stuff around the farm and in town a little.

I can't speak to the developer you are using ..
but your fil probably will behave fine.
I wouldn't let the leader throw you for a loop.
maybe expose it at 300 or 200 instead of box speed ?
or bracket ? from experience with 20-30 year expired
room stored film ... energetic developers and not extended development times ...
I guess you can keep " mental notes" for the next roll since you have a few others

Should be fine. The leader that sticks out of the canister is exposed to light, which changes its color.

If you look carefully even on new fresh film, it's that way.

The real test comes after you process it and print it. Usually expired film has more base fog, less contrast, and higher grain, most of which can be compensated for.

IIRC, using HC-110 reduces base fog when using long-expired film. Correct me if I'm wrong, fellow Ape Huggers?

With "expired but not sure HOW expired" film, I would expose it at half the box speed and develop normally. The film is going to have enough latitude that the results should be usable.
