Sorry I haven’t been responding recently, had finals and stuff to do, finally finished with those, yay!

It seems like there are some people interested in this idea, so I’ll let the poll go in till the 21st. I’ll also put a google form that will hopefully gauge interest more specifically. I’ll post it in OP and at the end of the thread when I get it done.

As stated before, I’m only going to get one film stock, so do keep that in mind. I’m personally rooting for Aerocolor, as that stuff looks hot AF in 35, MF and LF should be insane.

Can you share your curve (H&D) with time and temp agitation cycle please.

I don’t have a densitometer, but I did develop some. Shot at 100 iso, HC-110 B for 8 mins, and at 200 iso, HC-110 B for 10 minutes worked well. Temp was 20°C, inversions first 30 seconds, then 5 inversions every minute.

Slides shot at 100 iso and developed in HC-110 A for 12 minutes followed by bleaching and redevelopment worked extremely well. Same temp and agitation as standard processing.

Here is the link to the google form, you are still welcome to use the poll in the thread, but this will give a more accurate picture as far as interest goes. Unfortunately, seems like I can’t edit OP, so hopefully folks see this:

Can I vote twice? 😜

Sure!

I've included the link in the OP!
(Don't hesitate to use the 'report' function on your own post in a case like this)

I've also filled in the form

Thanks!

Looks like 6 people have submitted responses so far, so I’ll start to crunch numbers to see where we are in terms of viability, however, at a quick glance, it looks like this might be worthwhile.

I’ll start making preliminary inquiries to Kodak and the person I got my previous slitter from, and if everything works like I think it should, we should be good to go!

Good news and bad news.

Bad news first: getting a slitter to make medium format film from 5 inch stock is not as easy as I had hoped. The person I got the slitter from last time doesn’t go larger than 70mm, unfortunately. At least his communication is stellar, though!

There are a few solutions that I can think of:
  • It may be possible to 3D print one, but I don’t have a 3D printer, or any modeling experience, so it would need to be designed and built by someone else.
  • There is also the possibility of getting a 70mm roll of film off eBay, or from @rhizomeblur. It would not be fresh stock, but it would be color, and I would do my best to make sure it had been stored well. Looks like I would need about 200 feet of 70mm stock to make the 120/220 that is ordered.
For those that ordered medium format, I’ll add you guys to a group conversation, and we can discuss options.

On to good news: sheet film orders alone make buying a 150’ roll of Kodak Aerocolor IV possible! I will let you know if the information I have regarding the pricing and minimum order size is correct when I hear back from Kodak, hopefully some time next week.

That’s too bad about not having a densitometer. Aviphot properties are compression of shadows and compression of highlights, while having a quick rise in slope on the curve. I would love to know in hc110 what .10 above B+F is, interns of iso , asa, din, speed. Also I would be interested in what that shoulder looks like in zones 8-12 or . .up to 14 . In times of development. I’d also like to know what is the B+F is hc110 with fresh PE1 vs. expired PE1 base.

Anyone out there agfa aviphot 200 fresh and expired PE1, HC110 and a densitometer?

I have yet to see any developer used with aviphot that can give .10 above B+F for zone one, at box speed, while maintaining 1.25-1.35 above B + F for zone 8 .

I would real curious to see someone’s effort on that.

@greg zinselmeier feel free to make a thread on that question so this one can remain focused on the group buy thing. I think the question of material properties is a different one and deserving of its own attention, elsewhere on the forum.

Just a heads-up, as the order stands, we are about 90% through the 150’ roll. Another roll is certainly possible, but we would need to wait for a few more folks to join before the extra orders could be filled.

Just got an email back from Kodak, and I am getting told that min order is 10 rolls of 5 inch film now. I’ll ask about the previous email I was shown, hopefully they will get back to me today. Really hoping that there’s a way to order just one roll, because I was told previously that this was possible, and I would love to get this emulsion out to you guys, if for no other reason than to show it’s possible, and a viable option for color sheet film.

Got an email response, and unfortunately, they do not sell any individual rolls anymore. They cut down prices of master rolls on demand. The order quantities in the message received by the individual who gave me the idea was apparently a typo. While I probably could cut down 10 rolls of film given enough time, I just don’t have the ability to invest the initial capital to make it happen.

However, there could be a chance to get this film in sheets! The order quantities are small enough that I think it could be viable for a small company to bring to market. My suggestions for those that would like to see this film is to contact either Kamerastore, who has ordered this film before, or Washi. Let them know that the minimum order for this film is manageable, at only 10 rolls, and you think they could look into starting a campaign to make color sheet film.

This is super disappointing, but I do hope that you consider contacting those companies, as maybe we could give them reassurance that there is an audience for this type of film!

Thanks for updating us; too bad it falls through this time, but I really appreciate the effort you've put into this. It was well worth a shot, and you've given a possibility to us to pursue the matter.

Thanks, these were actually super helpful. Glad these recourses exist. I’ll definitely use this information when developing my film, although it will be slightly different.

Yeah, kinda disappointing. I shot Washi an email, as I know they do 4x5 film, haven’t gotten a response as of yet, I’ll definitely post here if I do though.

I am thinking about still offering BW sheet film and 120/220 film, using Aviphot 200 stock, but I’m not sure if I should start a new thread or see if I can get this one edited. I would be able to offer 120/220 film and sheet film for sure, as long as I know there is interest, because I can source both 5 inch and 70mm stock easily.

I know mist of us (including me) were hoping for Aerocolor, but Aviphot is super neat stuff too, and could definitely be used to make some fun pictures.

Do let me know your thoughts!

If you want, I can help, but since the scope would be quite different, I think a new/separate thread might be a better idea.

I’ll probably make a new thread, and I guess this thread can have a link to that one added somewhere. Should it also go on the user organized functions area, or somewhere else?

This sub-forum is as good as any.
It would be good to include something identifying each thread - something like "May 2023" in the title.
Would you like us to add "not going ahead" to the title of this thread?

I made a new thread on this board, so putting a link at the top of the OP and directing those interested there would probably be a good idea. Since I have a lot more evidence that folks might be interested, I also put a lot more information on the new thread’s OP, that way all the info is in one place.

New thread: https://www.photrio.com/forum/threads/possible-aviphot-200-5x7-4x5-220-and-120-purchase.199361/
