I received 100 sheets of paper today that I would like to identify. It is made by Kodak, on the label it say

Experiment
SE 31808 Contrast 1
7/85 31208-79611D

I know it is contrast grade 1 and dated 7/85. I received 11 packages of 16x20 unopened. There is a fiber paper with a cream base. No instructions.

Any ideas? Maybe Photo Engineer know something about this.

Thanks for any help
Randy

The information looks normal, all things considered.

It is an experimental coating made in 85 as you see. The engineer who coated it would be able to tell what it was, but that is about it.

That numbering is more like a film emulsion coating number than paper coating though. One of the last paper experiments I worked with was 31127 A-D for example. So, there are several extra numbers here that I'm not familiar with. They probably revised the coating #s along the way.

Of course, I never saw any boxed for outside shipment either, so that may make the difference. Ours came in either wide rolls or plain yellow boxes with the numbers written or stamped on them.

FE was a full width film experiment, FW was a narrow width film experiment, SO is a product to which something special was done like a different width or a different support. SE is new to me. (I know that FE and FW are counter intuitive, but that is not an error on my part)

Research coatings start with a character and a number such as J8, P3 or J9 or two characters and a number such as SC4 or RC1.
