"Scott for scientific method, Amundsen for speed and efficiency but when disaster strikes and all hope is gone, get down on your knees and pray for Shackleton." - Apsley Cherry-Garrard Worst Journey in the World.

"Men wanted for hazardous journey. Low wages, bitter cold, long hours of complete darkness. Safe return doubtful. Honour and recognition in event of success." - From an advertisement, almost certainly apocryphal, preceding Shackleton's expedition.

Shackleton brought everyone back alive.

Too bad he had to leave so many exposures behind.

I wonder what speed film they would have in 1915. He's captured the running footballers in almost complete stillness and some of the inside ship images are remarkably well exposed considering what looks like no flash. Maybe its the digital enhancement that has brought out the detail in the inside shots.
