Hi all--
I just picked up a couple more Exaktas at a flea market today. The gem for me was a Kine Exacta (spelled with the c, not the k) with a SUPER clean Zeiss Jena 3.5 Tessar. The main problem is that the knob for rewinding the film is not there. The removable back had the leatherette removed as well. So...if any other Exakta collectors/users out there happen to have any spare parts for this model, please let me know! I also picked up a Varex VX (for the lens) that has the latch for the back broken off, so the back will not close. Unfortunately, that one the issue is on the body side and not the back itself. Not sure what I am going to do there. Still, it was worth it to get the lens, a 58mm Zeiss Biotar that is also SUPER clean. Anyway...any Exakta parts people out there?

I am an "Exakta person", but really can't help you for service suggestions, especially in the U.S.
Best thing is probably to try to get hold of a cheap "parts" camera.

Before committing your cameras to expensive repairs, check your shutter curtains for pinholes (probably needs to be factored in).

I don't know the Kine, but if it's like the Varex models in that respect, you can use a film cassette instead of a take-up spool, eliminating the need for a rewind knob...

Well... don't just leave us all hanging. Is it a round or a square window?! And what is the serial number of the lens. The Zeissophiles will want to know.

I didn't know anyone would care! Let's see...the Kine is a version 5 square window. The lens serial number is 3575571. That's the 50mm tessar. The Biotar 58mm is 3702626. I guess I should dig around to see what year each lens was made...

The good thing on the Kine is that the shutter curtains are damn near perfect and the shutter speeds are very close to where they should be. The rewind knob is also needed for this particular camera to keep the back from rubbing up against the film advance sprockets. It's pretty amazing to me that the oldest Exakta I have seems to work the best out of all of them! It is too bad that someone doesn't have an Exakta repair service in the US, there are so many out there and people that come into my shop absolutely fall in love with them when the see them.

Tom Page in the UK might be able to help with spare parts. There was mention of "Expensive repairs" - his standard charge is around £40 for a full CLA if his prices haven't gone up in the past couple years. (I sold my exakta collection as I'd not been using it - I'm shooting medium format these days)
