Ever heard of a 1/2" tripod thread?

I'm very familiar with the common 1/4" tripod thread, and the 3/8" version as well, but I just ran across one with a 1/2" thread.

I realize that this would be handy for very large tripods that hold very heavy objects, but this in on a small (5" tall) table-top tripod. It's very well made, could hold up to five pounds, all black with no signs of use -- probably because of the tripod thread.

There's no labeling on it at all. FYI, the legs collapse, but do not slide inside the stem -- as with similar table-top tripods.

Anyone have any ideas about it and it's 1/2" thread? Maybe it's not a photographic item at all.

Maybe it originally came with a ball head or other head that screwed on there.

Are you sure it is 1/2"?

Standard microphone stands use a 5/8" threaded connector. Maybe it is a desktop mic stand.

I used a caliper to measure it, and it's 1/2". I don't know anything about micro tripods, but this is a small table tripod, but I'll see what I can find. A 1/2" tripod thread seems way too large for a microphone, but maybe.

After a SEARCH, it looks like you hit the nail on the head. There are lots of short, desk-top microphone tripods. All of them seem to have 5/8" threads on them -- which seems huge to me -- but that explains it.

That 1/2" is Fine Thread though not 1/2-13.

5/8 Coarse Thread is on Surveyor Tripods.

5/8" is the standard thread for a full height microphone stand like the ones you see on a concert stage. Since microphone brackets are generally made to fit that thread, tiny tripod desktop microphone stands that have become popular for use by podcasters, gamers, USB microphone users, and so on, also use the 5/8" thread even though it is surprisingly large for a dinky little tripod. That stand looks like the one that comes with "Blue Snowball" usb mics, for example.
