Hey community,

I'm into emulsions on glass long enough now...there's one question arising:

Who's interested in buying new stock BW photo glass plates? What formats are most interesting?

They would come at around ISO 5 and can be developed negative or positive...

I'd be coating and selling gladly, if there's economic demand

It's an understandable and valid question IMO, but please keep in mind that once this turns into a sales proposition, the Classifieds section is the place to take this to.
To gauge interest for a product or service, this place is just fine, so please carry on.

Thanks for the hint!

I have absolutely no intention for marketing or any sales in this thread!

There's so much to plan ahead...I just wanted to see if it's even worth to think about it

Seeing how there is only one guy that I'm aware of still coating and selling pre-made glass plates, I'd certainly think there's a market for another player. I buy 4x5 and 8x10 plates, though I don't shoot 'em nearly as often as film.

BTW: I've heard some whispering that glass in 2mm thickness doesn't fit all cameras/plate holders...do you guys think it's interchangeable with 1.5mm thick glass for all cameras?

Well, I can tell you for fact that Zebra Dry Plates don't fit into J Lane plate holders and that J Lane plates don't fit properly in Zebra holders. I've never done any specific measurements, but it seems that Euro glass thickness and overall dimensions are different from American plates produced by Jason Lane.

When Jason stopped making plates, I had to buy all new holders for the Zebra plates. I probably could have simply waited to see if Jason eventually starts making plates, again, but I'm an impatient type!

1.5mm thickness may be more "universal" but I'd be concerned about the glass moving out of critical focus position with various camera positions. Jason's holders may work well for thinner glass because his holders have spring bands that push against the glass.

Hope this provides some info for you.

Hey @jacaquarie

Good to know you still have some

5x7 on the shortlist!

BTW: 5x7 inches would make 12.7 x 17.8 cm...would your camera/holder accept 13 x 18 cm, too? Around 5.1 x 7.08 inches...

Are you sure about that @Peter Schrager ?

In this case I guess the US market is not interesting for me or fellows..shipping would be so much from Germany.

Jason had moved to Arkansas to take a new job and be closer to his family. I saw a post on Facebook that he had located a commercial space and will start making plates again. he gave no definitive timeline for this. I would say if you have the drive to start producing plates then go ahead and do so.
Why not get in touch with some of the retailers in the E.U. and get their feedback. Jason was also selling plates through Freestyle in Los Angeles; perhaps you can do the same.

I do not know if my plate holders will accept the 13 X 18 plates.
Had no reason to try.
My holders are the Jason Lane Pictographica holders.

I wish you much success.

I'm potentially into occasional use of "quarter plate" size. J Lane's plates fit perfectly in my vintage plate holders and work well with my camera, as do 1950s Ilford and Kodak plates.
