Does anyone here make collodion mixtures? I was wondering how to mix collodion with ether safely. And does ether have to be used immediately once the bottle is opened?

i've never used collodion that was spiked with photographic salts
but still it didn't dry out fast in a closed bottle.

You can store ether for longer if you mix it with ethanol. Ethanol acts as a stabilizer.

Once diethyl ether is opened the peroxides will start to form after a period, which might cause explosion. Ethanol will stabilize and slow it down. Don't expect the risk to be stopped completely but it is far better than nothing.

Ok thanks, but wouldnt mixing the ether with ethanol have a negative effect on the photographic quality of the collodon?

Photographic collodion is already a mixture of ethanol and diethyl ether. Salted collodion is usually a 50/50 ether/alcohol mixture with bromide and iodide.

hope you could advise me..... its time to do a new batch of collodion , its been one year since i made a batch.....and i have had stored in a metal cupboard a glass bottle of ether /ethanol and salts ... it is dated april 2015 so 1 year old.
it says just add usp collodion and i wondered if you could advise me what to do.
it looks clear unopened for 1 year should i do a peroxide test with potassium iodide first,before adding the new collodion?
should i just dispose and buy some new ether
any advice would be welcomed
