As to destroying negatives. That is up to the individual photographers and I do see some of their view points. Could you or someone print from my negs the way I do? Do you see or understand how or why I print my work the way I do? Would you burn or dodge or crop the neg as I would wanted it. Would the final print be my work or yours?

Does it even matter if your dead? In my view, no. You live, you die, what happens in between those two things is your problem. What happens before and after is some one elses problem.

It does matter if you value your work. Like I said before some photographers believe the same, they rather have prints that they made out there in the public. Not someone else's interpretation of that the original. Even if its a students. If the original photographer wanted his work/ negetives saved to a museum or some sort of historical society thats different. The work would be of use for future reference. I know that Ansel's negs are saved as such and he had hoped that a student would studied his negs. But, I believe the institute has never let students handle them. They are kept safe. Brett Weston did destroyed most of his negs but he also saved some at his brother Cole's request. Only after Brett punched holes into them. He had seen how his fathers work was being mass produced.
If you go to an art museum you see students trying to sketch an original painting or sculpture. They are studying the work. Trying to master a technique. They are not allowed to paint over the art. Only in Music can someone do a "Cover" of an original song or music and get paid for it. If you had your way, photography would be in the same position. I rather have my work, my own true version of what I saw and felt be the only one out there.

Yes, I would have it that way. What about taking the exact same photograph someone else has done? Same thing, in the end, seriously, you have to have your head compleatly in your ass to even give a damn.

This is the biggest problem with with art, everyone takes it far too seriously. This is the problem with most people, they take themselves far to seriously. Its pretty presumtious to even think that someone would want to even bother reprinting your negatives! At the very least, doing such a thing is proving how over swollen your ego is. In the worst case, your showing how much you loathe humanity, and wanting to deprive it of anything good, and doing everything in your own power to do so. No print will last forever, but if it is a good shot, someone will want a print of it. Now, this is what will happen, since they cannot have a new print made, they will scan the old one into a computer, and do a computer reproduction of it. you tell me which you think is worse!

So, while these people are going off to burn their negatives, they should build a funeral pyre for thier entire family to burn in! Its the same sort of thing, making sure nobody can ever benefit from something you did.

I'm will be leaving mine around, heh, and i hope some bum looks at them, thinks "man this guys sucks" and burns them in their fire place to stay warm. Would be a fitting end. haha :D

Ben,

you don't even know me use such words of disrespect. I will not even go further with this discussion on APUG. I see that you are in Portland. If you're in Oregon then I invite you to come to a Portland Photographers Forum meeting and we can discuss this in person. We meet every third Wednesday of the month at Wilson High. 7PM in the teacher lounge.
Otherwise, I will not continue my portion of this thread. Have a good day.

My negatives are worthless I would think but if any of my family member can make a profit out of them it would be great.
