I am moving my location this fall and I have a lot of gear that will not move with me that may be of interest to some here.

I plan to put it on Ebay and Craig list, without prices as there is so much stuff I do not know how to value it . On another site it
is important to put price down and also not direct to another site.

So how does the APUG FS work, I plan to photograph each item and try for best offer, I am willing to put it here first and donate
portion to the site but I am not capable of putting a value.


Any suggestions on how to sell this gear, over the next five months??

The Classified section here probably doesn't work as well for auction type sales as for fixed price sales.

That being said, you can probably place "Make An Offer" ads here as long as you can arrive at a minimum price, in your own mind, that you will accept.

This community certainly won't give you the same full exposure that Ebay might, but it will probably get you better, more informed looks.

You could always consider placing listings first on eBay, with a high reserve. Then, if the reserve isn't met, list it here at a lower price.
 
Do your homework, establish a price and list it here. When you list it on eBay, you will have to pay regardless of if you sell it or not. If you list it here at a fair price, it will probablly move. If not then put it on eBay. My experince on Craigs list is that things can get pretty weird and I have sold and bought on each of the three sites. 500+ transactions on eBay with 100% positive. Not just a guy with an opinion.
 
There are so many items, old , like new, odd ball, parts for enlargers, lenses, enlargers, just a lot of stuff. I am uncomfortable listing a price as most of the stuff in my mind is worth more than what it really would go for.


I have no clue with sort of thing and would really like to list in a way that is best reasonable offer so it can move fast.
 
Search for the item on ebay. In the left column, select "Completed Items" - that will take you to a page so you can see what the item recently sold for - or failed to attract any bids.
 
Hi Bob, one quick way is to take a lot of pictures of the stuff you have and post those on a FS thread here. The community is very educated and people kind of know what they're looking for. I'm sure you'll get lots of quick offers this way. For the heavier and more difficult stuff to pack, then craigslist and kijiji are the way to go. This way if someone sees what they like they could come by and pick it up, no packing/shipping hassle this way, and you have cash in hand fast

The advice about seeing completed sales on either eBay or here is good advice.
 
In my opinion, the problem with "make an offer" listings is that the seller is often just fishing to see what he/she can get, without a serious intention to sell. I'm not saying that's what you're doing, just what many do. Even more the case on Craigslist. So you may lose attention from serious buyers.
 
If I'm looking to buy, I much prefer that the seller knows or has some idea of what price he wants and communicates that. If I have to make up a number I usually won't bother.

Completed auctions on ebay has always been a good gauge, but now you can filter by "sold" too so you don't have to wade through a bunch of auctions that ended with no sale. I lop off a few of the highs and lows and look at the middle numbers to estimate a value.
It's good to also lump in the shipping amounts, especially for stuff that may need a lot of shipping overhead.
 
Get some unbiased people in there to give you an honest appraisal. Colin would be a good choice. If you want to fly me down to Toronto and put me up I will do it for you
 
Bob, whenever I sell something through the forums, I find out what it is worth through ebay then knock off enough moolah that it will sell almost instantly when I list it. I think that is the best way to go if you want to sell things here and sell them fast. If you go the ebay route you will get more money, but it takes a lot more time. I find that a few dollars isn't worth it. If you don't want to spend the time researching the price of every item, list a price and state best offer. It will cost you time with lowballers, but that may be a way for you to go. Sometimes people you know and like will want your item, then no matter how much you get it is a win/win for you both.

I have to agree, I way prefer selling on the forums. Actually less risk, as most forum buyers are reasonable and knowledgeable and will not do the old eBay flip and demand money off for fake damage, or other lies.

I have also seen a camera hoarder local auction in Ohio work out well. The family raised more cash with the 'junk' than they did giving a NYC major camera auctioneer the really good stuff. I was involved as adviser and chooser of junk.

I bought all the LF myself. It wasn't that much LF. I figure there is still $10K of junk left and then the tools...

It is a lot of work to do valuation, especially as age, condition, location/shipping, how long you want to wait to get your price, etc. can make a big difference.

The last few times I've put stuff on ebay, it was free to list, and I only paid if I sold. That keeps the volume of junk on ebay very high. And when you do sell, the fees are kinda steep. But ebay is a good reference for current prices. Just make sure the auction has been completed. Some folks list their stuff for high prices, and the item doesn't sell. You can't judge by the initial asking price.

Don't forget to figure shipping charges in your sales. And good luck; I'm curious as to what you have ...
 
I saw the names on our show and I though I wonder if thats the Colin from APUG, it will be great to see you and yes you can look at some of the stuff.
I think there is some pretty good stuff getting ready to go out the door.
We also will be getting rid of very good frames, large and small at a very good price.

After that cottage cheese shot of you in the water years ago I am hesitant. I have already had a offer from a friend in Hamilton to give me some starting pricing.

One of my biggest worry's about selling here and at LLF is that good or bad a lot of people know me and I do not want to piss off people if I value something, higher and then take a forum of bashing about selling equipment that may not be pristine- I used all my equipment heavily so there is some wear and tear .

Since I have a lab and existing business , it just takes one pissed poster to hurt my company's name. Some of this stuff I bought new in the 90's and I used it day to day, for example I have about 10 -50mm and 80mm Rodagon lenses, holders and stuff that got some heavy use. but they are still close to my heart.
Some of it is Colour and Condensor enlargers 4x5 that I have purchased used and since the digital revolution not needed any more.

Toronto Image Works did this a few years back, with varying success. Jones and Morris Murals just brought in a dumpster and pushed about 8 horizontal enlargers into it rather than sell.


Anyways I am blathering, in about a month I will have this sorted out and if a Mod can chime in on how I can list here without breaking any rules I would appreciate it.
 
I hope you will be taking your Durst enlargers and accessories to use at your new location, however, if you have any of these items to sell I'd be interested:

HOMASKSET : series of masks that go under the Laraneg 8x10 negative holder glass
Any 8x10 negative holders
LARANEG light trap parts
 

I'm not very good at that kind of thing either. When I sell I generally sell for less than what things are "worth" to move them, but what intriques me more-and-more is hte idea of setting ebay price at 99 cents and seeing where it goes. Auctions I watch like htat are often a lesson in reality.
 
I do have durst parts and a durst 4x5 that is going to be put up for sale.
 
Somewhat related , I have a killer 180 apo rodagon enlarging lens that needs some repair.

Is there someone good in NA that somebody could recommend?

Just found this thread and thought I'd toss in my two cents worth. I expect the folk on this forum would appreciate the value of your stuff and most likely speak up if they thought the price on something was out of line. How about putting your price on an item with"or best offer"attached. If no offers are forthcoming I'd check my price again. But that's just a thought(might not be worth two cents)....
