Hi All--

When I got my V750, I found the best position for the feet was on the "+" setting, using the slide tray. I then went ahead and set all my other film holders the same way. Now, I'm wondering whether that was the right thing to do.

I could probably rig up some sort of masks or whatever, so I could use the same image across all of the film holders for testing, but I'm hoping someone out there has done that work, and could tell me whether it was OK to set all my holders the same, or whether I really do have to test each holder individually.

Thanks--

A particular scanner's fixed lens has only on optimum focus point that does/should not vary. If all your holders place your film in the exact same spot and there is no variation from the film itself, then theoretically you should be able to place all of the holder's feet in the same position. If you are scanning mounted slides, then all bets are off because the variation in slide mount thickness introduces a problem plus most slide mounts don't hold the film super flat so that introduces another variable.

Thanks for your response, Doug, but the point I was trying to get at was whether anyone had any experiences with the manufacturing tolerances of Epson's different holders for the V750.

That is to say, does the "+" setting on all of the different holders (35mm, 120, 4x5) result in the film being the same height above the scanner glass (not taking into account film curl)?

Measured height of Epson V700/V750 film holders

So, since no one seemed to have any first-hand experience with this, I decided to do some testing myself. Having 2 each of 35mm and 120 film holders, purchased about 4 years apart, I thought this might be useful to some people.

All holders had their height adjusters set to the "+" setting. I measured the height of the film rail at each position there was an adjuster (9 places for the 120 and 5 for the 35mm.)
Height (mm)

Holder
AVG
MIN
MAX

120 #1 (9 places)
3.38mm
3.32mm
3.44mm

120 #2 (9 places)
3.37mm
3.28mm
3.43mm

35mm #1 (5 places)
3.35mm
3.32mm
3.40mm

35mm #2 (5 places)
3.41mm
3.35mm
3.43mm

35mm Slide** (5 places)
2.57mm
2.49mm
2.67mm
So there is good consistency among the film holders. It is probably safe to set all film holders the same way after determining the optimum height. But, it is probably not a good idea to use the slide tray to do the initial testing. It assumes the use of a 1.6mm thick mount (half-mount thickness=0.8mm + 2.57 = 3.37mm height), whereas most typical machine-mount slides are 1.3mm thick. At this point, I don't know if this is a critical issue or not, I plan to do some testing to see how big the "sweet spot" of focus is on my copy of the scanner.

Hope this info is useful to someone.
