I have an Epson v700 scanner I'm using with a mac and have been using it with no issues but it started to randomly start scanning black photos. It's showing a preview scan but when I scan the photos are pure black. I can see the negatives in the preview however. Also been somewhat noisey when starting. Any ideas what could cause this ?thanks

I'm a Windows user and am not familiar with Mac.
Standard troubleshooting procedure is:
Roll back software updates
Try a different input cable, USB, firewire or similar
Update the driver
Uninstall the device software, wipe the drive free space, reinstall the software
Take the device to a repair shop if the previous steps do not correct the problem.

I assume you're using Epson scan or Silverfast in transparency mode with the document blocker in the lid/transparency unit removed.
Has the transport lock been set by accident? There is one for the bed and one for the transparency adapter.

Isn't there a cable between lid and bottom of the scanner that can get disconnected? I think the light goes out then.
But your previews are OK...

If the scanner is able to create a preview, then the carriage, cable, and light must be working (at least part of the time). So, I suspect a post-capture processing issue rather than a hardware issue. Is there any way to reset all adjustments back to the factory defaults?

The driver may be corrupted so uninstall Epson Scan and then go to the Epson web site for the latest version. That is your factory reset as the machine itself has no memory.

If you were using the slide scanner, sometimes the sensor cannot tell which way the side is oriented, and sometimes this causes just that slide (or another) to scan black.

I've seen this on my V850 Epson when I have ICE turned on or when scanning at a silly high resolution using Silverfast. Have you tried both Silverfast and the Epson Scan software?

This is a ten year old thread.

I still think we should figure out how to colour old, dormant threads sepia.

Call me crazy, but most forum software should have a feature that when you hit reply, you get a pop-up pointing out this thread is over <X> years old.

But I don't think I've ever seen a forum prompt like that.
