Epson V600 tutorial

Went for the V600 at the end. First impression is relatively good especially on MF. Would appreciate though if anyone can share their workflow settings-wise in order to achieve the best results for B&W negatives and Color slides.

I have both the Epson Scan (obviously) and Vuescan available.

Start with Wayne Fulton's Scanning Basics 101 - All about digital images tutorials. Get the basics down first in regard to white/black points and histograms.

I use Epson scan software at 48 bit 2400dpi. Save as TIFF. No ICE, won't work anyway with BW. Clone out the dust spots in the film from the scan right away. No sharpening in the scan; Normally, no other scanning adjustments. I do all in Lightroom; sometimes with Elements. Sometimes I set the color to auto during the scan. Sometimes that works. Sometimes it clips the highlights. So I adjust the Levels. The most important adjustment for me is Levels. Moving the black and white sliders will restore the colors and lighting about 90%. Tweak other sliders for the last 10%. Sharpen a lot at the end. I don't have Vuescan.

Try scanning the same shot different ways and compare. In the end you have to develop your own workflow. Good luck.

If you have VueScan and PhotoShop, then the easiest way to good results is to get the ColorPerfect plugin for PhotoShop.

Then you can scan the image as a 48 bit TIFF raw file, import it in PhotoShop, invert and adjust it in ColourPerfect and finish it in PhotoShop.

ColourPerfect costs $70 but it's nothing compared to the time and aggravation of trying to do it without it.
