For what it's worth, the last time I checked, the Epson drivers for Linux were ancient and were never updated. Because the functionality was rolled into SANE (Scanner Access Now Easy). So on a Mint-based computer, you probably want to do a "sudo apt-get install xsane" which will download the SANE software and xsane gui for it.

I was thinking about positioning the glass without marring the scanner bed.

Has never happened... and I teach loads of high school kids.

Andrew, You know what would be neat? If you could create a FLickr group where your students could post their photos. Maybe their best if that's better. I'd love to see their creativity.

That's not a bad idea. I would have to get parental permission first. Thanks for the idea!

Maybe this is going to far. But having people comment on them to give them ideas and learn how to handle critiques could be a learning experience. Being able to let outsiders see your work is important for learning the 'Business" end and learning both praise and criticism. If I was a student, I'd want others to see my work. I enjoy that as an adult. So I would be interested as as student or young person. Sure there's ego there. But if you want to make a career out of photography, you have to learn how to meet the public whether you're a photographer or a singer or actor or whatever your art. Don't forget to check with administration.

I just remembered that when my wife taught special education, her kids did a performance of acting like they were selling cameras at Crazy Eddie's, for those who remember that firm's ads.

She videotaped it for playback to the parents and they loved seeing their kids work.

I used the Epson free download link to get SilverFast on Mac for my V600 (though I also lament the lack of meaning Linux support, but alas!) and while the usability does leave a lot to be desired, I like that can save to RAW 16-bit TIFF files so I can then use my scanner as a de-facto sensitometer, which is more difficult with only 8 bits of resolution.

I agree that the film holders are super fiddly, however, and I've come close to snapping mine on a number of occasions. I'll have to check out the BetterScanning options again, as last time I looked earlier this summer he had temporarily ceased sales and I believe is back in business now.

EpsonScan (v3.770) can save to TIFF 16bit.
