Epson V500

I got this scanner new for $100, and I know it is not a high end product, but it does the scanning in a rather easy fast way. I use the software that came with it, but also got as of a week VueScan software. I haven't play a lot with VueScan, but it seems to be slower than the Epson Software, is that because the VueScan software is obtaining more data from negatives of just because it is a 3rd party software.

Do you recommend using Epson software for my specific scanner or going with other?

Answering your question delves into personal bias, I for instance would never buy a Mercedes again (having a few in my family) and think they are over rated cars which have all the feeling of driving a sponge on the road. Comfortable but no feedback. I much prefer a Toyota Crown or Cresida.

So, given that I'll say that I prefer the Epson software. I have found that it works best for me. I'm an IT nut (by trade) and despite wanting to get to like vuescan several times since version 7.0.something I just can't get to like it.

I scan one or (say 4) image(s) at a time into Photoshop so the interface for Epson works best straight away in this manner. I don't want to save as TIFF (preferring PSD for my layers and comments and whatnot) so the steps of scan to TIFF are just wasted on me.

I have found I do less in Scanner driver and more in photoshop, although I do some things in the scanner driver. Setting rough levels is one of them.

I've found that I get my best results using the scanner to scan "positive" no matter what. You'll find lots on my blog, but start here and try here next. I know that first link discusses the 3200, but I have confirmed that it is consistent across 4870, 4990 and V700.

The discussion in the first link also seems to work with Nikon film scanners too.
