Hi,

I’ve had an Epson Surecolor P800 printer sitting in the box for many years. The inks that accompanied it have also been sitting in their respective boxes for many years, and are no longer appropriate to use.

However, in the ensuing years, Epson has introduced a different black, so that there are now a choice of 4 black inks to go into what are three slots for different levels of black, alongside the five slots for the various color cartridges.

I believe the newest black is the Epson T850 Ultrachrome photo Black ink. The other three choices are the Epson T850 Ultrachrome HD light black ink, the Epson T850 Ultrachrome HD Matte black ink, and the Epson T850 Ultrachrome HD Light light Black ink.

So, I’m just checking in to see which three I should choose.

My instinct is to go with the Ultrachrome photo black, the Ultrachrome light black, and the Ultrachrome light, light black, but wanted to check in with this group to see what others have chosen.

Thank you,

Jim Benson

You need all four; that's how this generation of printers worked.
You need both Photo and Matte black, which alternate based on media choice.
Then you have Light black and Light Light black which are used regardless of media.
Thus, there are four slots related to black, and only three are used simultaneously.
The printer may refuse to print if any of the slots (regardless which one) is empty or houses an empty cartridge.
