Epson Scan 2 frame recognition

Hello all. I'm a bit lazy and am just now getting around to asking this. I scan on an Epson V600, prior to Epson Scan 2 I put my negatives in the holder, put the holder in the scanner, closed the lid, hit preview and got a preview of every frame that would be scanned. The scanner always automatically recognized every frame of 35mm and also medium format supposing I had the correct frame size set. Now ever since Epson Scan 2 has released I have had zero luck with any kind of accurate frame recognition and I have to manually go in and select the area I want to scan. I haven't really found any info on this issue anywhere else but since I've had this issue with multiple computers I'm starting to think it's something Epson changed in the software.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

I have EpsonScan v3 with my V500 and I'm using a BetterScanning 120 holder, so I uncheck Thumbnails, so I can select each frame with a border around, which allows me to straighten before cropping.
It's very easy and not very time consuming and you select the frames you want.

True it's not too bad, but it was faster before and plenty accurate.

On Windows at the bottom of the Professional mode window is a Configuration box. One of the tabs in that box is film size for medium format.

That’s my issue. Those options worked fine in the original EpsonScan but since I’ve upgraded to EpsonScan 2 the scanner doesn’t seem to recognize frames regardless of whether I have the correct format selected.

When upgrading between versions of software sometimes preference settings might get jumbled up. I would completely uninstall all software disconnect scanner and reboot the system. Then reinstall with the newest version available and reconnect the hardware. See if that helps out.

I still use the version of Epson Scan that came with my V500 (I guess that’s version 1) and the MF frame recognition has never worked correctly for me. I’ve tried every possible combination in that configuration box.

Are you using a PC or Mac. On the Mac, Epson Scan 2 doesn't work well. For this reason, Epson has arranged that users can get a free copy of SilverFast for these scanners.

I’ve been using it on my Mac. But if this is the issue I may give it a try on my PC, I’ve tried SilverFast and I really do not like it.

Well just for the sake of trying I reinstalled EpsonScan 2 on my MacBook the other night and I’m now getting perfect frame recognition.

So even though I’ve tried this repeatedly in the past either they’ve fixed the issue or I was having some kind of glitch.

It use to be that when you deleted a file or removed a program/app the flag for used space or free space was set to free space then on reinstall the corrupt file was recognized as being installed and the flag was reset to used space on the HD.
New systems should have corrected this by writing the new file despite the file header on the HD. On mechanical HD's I wipe the free space after removing the program/app before reinstalling the the program/app.

I was forced to 'upgrade' to Silverfast after upgrading my Mac to the lastest OS and I don't like it either. I probably haven't played with the settings enough but my scans definitely don't look as good as they did with EpsonScan.

It’s not the scan quality of silver fast that I take issue with it’s the user interface. It’s a lot easier for me to do my scanning with the MacBook and scanner on the dining room table. Because the room I have my PC set up in just doesn’t allow room for the scanner.
