I recently picked up a used Epson Stylus Photo 2400. After successfully cleaning the head with Jon Cones piezo flush and using Jon's piezography digital negative inkset I was able to get some decent digital negatives.
The problem that I am having at present is the cartridges when left for any length of time is that they will drain the ink out into the printer.
My question is there any way to fix this problem short of replacing the head?

It sounds as if the seals at the base of the inksets are faulty, speak to Epson to see what they think. I have always found them to be very helpfull with their products when there is a problem.

You may get various answers off the forum but for a problem like this there is no better source of info than from the manufacturer.

Wanted to give an update on this thread. I talked to Epson tech support and they were very helpful, not! There advise was that I should use only Epson ink cartridges and that I probably had already ruined the head. So I asked her a hypothetical question that what could I do if this was happening with Epson cartridges and she said that I should send it to one of there service centers...no DIY solution to my problem.

I got to thinking about the problem and I had one cartridge that didn't empty through the head so I tried cleaning the head with a head cleaner that I got from Cone. It is a partial cartridge that seats in the head and you can use a syringe with Cone's piezo flush to force the flush through the head. I pushed and pulled the flush several times in each position and then put flush cartridges in and ran several cleanings and nozzle
Checks and everything looked good. I then turned the power off, swung the head in the middle with a strip of paper underneath and after a couple of days, absolutely no leaks. I then put my piezo inks back in, and I am once again making very nice digital negatives and still no leaking. It has been several weeks and I think that I may have solved my problem...no help from Epson

Diagnosing a problem over the telephone is not the easiest thing to do with some accuracy, so I would not condemn them completely. I had a problem downloading updated software for my R3000 not long after I bought it and they gave me a great deal of help, even calling me to save the phone call cost. The 300o died last month. Then when I bought my P600 a few weeks ago, lo and behold, the same problem but this time it was only a simple, no stupid error on my behalf but the staff at Epson could not have handled the situation better, but I felt a bit of a clown afterwards.

John, I can believe that they were helpful on a software problem, unfortunately my problem was with the hardware.
On a brighter note I just setup my new P600 yesterday. I bought it from B&H last Friday and I was setting it up on Monday afternoon. They shipped it for free and I will be getting a $200 rebate as well.
I also got some paper that arrived UPS at the same time.
I have been using B&H for years...best prices and there service and shipping is great. If you ever have a problem they will make it right. I live in Buffalo, NY and usually get my order in two to three days from NYC (about 450miles)
I am excited about the P600 as this is really my first good color inkjet printer as I have been an analogue photographer for most of my 68 years.
I will dedicate the r2400 to my digital negatives.

Ralph,
I hear you on the ink prices. I also ordered some empty cartridges and ink from Owl Ink. They were the only ones that had the bulk ink for the P600. I printed some standard color and B&W images with Epson OEM inks. My plan is to fill the empty cartridges with the bulk Owl ink and see how it works with a complete change of ink. I talked with Cone about ink for the P600 and they said that they should have their version of the HD ink in about a month. I will let you know how this works out.

If you like me have graduated to a P600 you will find it to be a truly incredible printer. Apart from the earlier printers where you got a B&W image simpy by the printer shutting off the colour channels and printing various shades of one black ink, I have never been able to achieve a true pure B&W image with the later printers such as my previous R1400 and recent R3000. The P600 gives really impressive B&W with no colour cast, unless you intentionally introduce it. Even the warm or cold black tones are subtle and require no adjustment.

Straight out of the box after setting it up I printed a lovely photograph of my two grandchildren. I didn't even have to calibrate my screen.

Even the ink cartridgdes area decent size at 25cc, but I have installed a customised bulk ink system using dye's that are indistinguishable from the Epson originals. The price of the bulk ink for 125cc (5 times the quamtity of a cartridge) is about twice the price of a cartridge (in Uk).
