I have had an Epson P600 for several years and use third party inks. I have had zero problems with this ink and I can fill the cartridges while they are installed and only have to remove the cartridge when the printer tells me that the cartridge is empty. The printer doesn't like the strange cartridge, asks me if I'm sure that I want to use the cartridge then it accepts the cartridge and all works as it should. In over two years I have NEVER had a clogged nozzle and it prints beautifully with no problems. I have a color Munki and make profiles for all the paper that I use and that keeps my color looking good.
For a while I have been getting messages from Epson to update there software down-loader when I boot my computer. I had heard that Epson has upgraded the software in older P800 to reject anything but Epson cartridges and newer P800 and above must use Epson cartridges.
Has anyone heard or can direct me to some information on Epson software updates on the P600?
I found after years of refilling ink cartridges at Costco, suddenly my HP printer will not take refilled cartridges no matter what I do. If you were dealing with a computer and wanted to protect oneself from hackers, then I would say update, but a printer?? ===> cannot see why one should take a chance.
You might want to check the inkjetmall.com forum before doing any update. I have seen this issue talked about there. If there are any shenanigans by Epson, those piezography guys would know.

The update can put another "Utility" software and then you can't monitor ink levels then it says the ink levels are low and cartridges need to be changed and on and on.
Before yoy know it the day has wizzed by and you still can't print.
As they say above "If it aint broke..."

You did not say what OS you are using. Some Epson updates have to do with changes in the OS as it gets updated by the manufacturer which may cause printing problems. As long as you are not having problems I would not update. You should be able to turn Epson's message center off or at least select which applications it checks for updates. You can go to Epson's web site and download the driver software package and store it on your computer then if you start having problems install it.
