I went from a V550 to the 4990 so I could scan 4x5 and now when I do a preview they are very dark and the tab for negative size is no longer there as well as saving my scans to a different drive is gone. Any idea what happened?
Sounds like the transparency back light is not working.
Of course, you remembered to remove the back pressure pad for scanning documents, right?
This could be because the backlight is defective/not plugged in properly, OR (most likely if you are using Epson Scan) the program is not in the proper setting.
Are you using the negative holder or just laying the negative on the glass?
Did you re-install the software or just plug the new scanner in?
You probably should uninstall Epson Scan and reinstall it according to the instructions; it might not be registered with the other scanner properly if you didn't reinstall the software.
If this doesn't work, then you probably have an old Windows Registry entry that is refusing to "give up" access to the reserved addresses.
Editing the Windows Registry can be very tricky and result in botching the whole operating system. I have done this a lot in the past without blowing up my computer, but you'll need to do this at your own risk.
Do some Google searches on "remove epson scanner from windows registry".
You could do something drastic like installing VueScan (hamrick.com). I run my Epson 4990 with VueScan because I'm using a Linux computer, but VueScan does work with Windows and Mac.
For Windows Advanced System Care will correct invalid registry entries without harming your system. Iobit uninstaller will uninstall programs and aps and remove leftover items that the programs uninstall does not. Both are freeware available at Iobit.com.
Post a screenshot of your epsonscan settings if the previous does not apply or correct the problem.
