I've just installed an Epson 4990 Photo per the Epson install instructions.

When I try to use Epson Scan or the Twain driver in PS I get an error telling me that there is a communication error. Additionally the scanner status LED blinks orange/red after blinking green for a few moments.

Is this scanner DOA?

I made sure I had the two shippings locks unlocked.

Any hints would be appreciated.

Thanks,

Don Bryant

Don,

I have neve used the 4990, but have owned Epson 3200 and now an Epson 4870.

Never remember even once seeing a blinking orange/red light on either of them.

Good chance IMO you have a DOA.

If you go into the html user's guide that was installed when you installed the software and then go down to product information, you should see a subheading for lights. It should give you a chart of what the codes mean. Mine for the 4870 doesn't show any orange lights (just red), so things must have changed with the 4990.

Are you using a known good port and USB cable? USB port problems or a bad cable can cause the communication error (so can a DOA scanner, but we are trying to be positive here!). You might try another know cable. Also, you might want to try a known good firewire cable and port just to be sure you have covered all your bases.

Okay the LED is RED not ORANGE.

Anyway thanks to everyone that has PMed me and to Doug and Sandy. I'll delve into these issues later this evening.

For today I'm off to play with my new Canon EOS Rebel XTi digi-whacker camera.

Cheers,

Don
