Hey everyone,

I'm loving my Epson 4490 for what it can do. Great scanner and easy to batch scan most things. I get great webscans out of it.

I'm considering upgrading it as I plan to provide a better product for my future clients. I used to be digital but am moving to a film workflow.

I shoot both medium format and 35mm, accompanied by digital when called for. I'm looking to get all 3 of these formats onto (a) a CD of printable scans/jpegs up to 16 x 20 size and (b) a good set of proof (4x6) prints.

Curious if you any suggestions as to what I should do? Should I upgrade my Epson 4490? Get the betterscanner upgrades? Stick with what I have and...?

PS: I'm new here! :D

Er, that's one suggestion.

If you decide not to go with the Canon you can baby-step up to the V700/V750 (especially if you may go bigger than medium format) or you can jump to the Nikon Coolscan 9000 ED. It's probably all you will ever need and does crank out some very fine scans with very little effort.

A member here, pelicle also has some great articles on getting the most out of your scanner and he even shows you how to do it using the Epson scanner software. If you haven't read up on those articles I would start there.

Thanks for the tips. I'm having trouble looking up pelicle. Do you have a link I could refer to?

I'm considering the V700 route, but I only shoot 35mm and medium format. I intend to make prints, but I only intend to make 8 x 10 prints out of my "electronic negatives". Anything larger I figure I could get re-scanned by my local lab to some crazy amount.
