Is the Epson 4490 Photo Scanner compatible with Windows 8?
 
I see Windows 8 in the drop down menu of operating systems under drivers on the epson tech support page
 
Perfect!!

I thought that the Epson 4490 Photo was not supported by the Mac OS 10.9 but it is and now it is working.
