Help.
I have a Epson pefection 1650 scanner for which I have a separate lid to scan 4X5 negatives.Today I tried to scan some negatives and the scanner refused it said could not find film. After several tries no go. So as a last resource I unplugged scanner and restarted it again. It worked for two negatives and now the same story does not recognize the film is on the scanner even when I restart scanner again.
Any ideas what I am doing wrong or what I can do to correct that?

Thanks in advance Greg

No doubt you've already checked the connection between the transparency lid and the scanner to make sure it's tightly connected? That's what it sounds to me like, like the connection could be loose and the transparency unit may not be communicating consistently with the scanner.

Thanks Katharine
I tried with the lid switch on and off. I made sure all connections are secure and all the way in. I also disconnected and connected USB plug to no avail. The lid light comes on when scanning. I must be doing something wrong.

Ah, yes. This sounds familiar. My issue with the 1650 transparency adapter is that it tries to put a 4x5 negative in a 6x6 frame.

I have not found a solution for this phenomena either. I have tried epson forums, FAQs and lots of internet searches. Uninstalling and reinstalling the software does provide a temporary solution (for about two scans), but then the problem does return.

I fear the solution to this problem is GAS. That's the abbreviation for Gear Acquisition Syndrome. Yup, a new scanner should fix this right up. And with typical GAS problems, it's easy to buy, tough to pay.

Have you tried just going into manual cropping mode and doing your own crops? This what you have to do in this situation with the newer Epson scanners.

No, the issue is that the scanner seems to think the 4x5 negative is really a 6 x 6 negative. It automatically assumes the wrong thing.

Thanks Joe. The window with set up screen when I turn it on automatically said 4X5 for size but when scan is successful it appears square sitting in the window #1. Is that that the program thinks it is 6X6? because window #1 is 4X5 and the image is sitting in the middle sort of square?.

To all who were interested, I received answer today on my email to Epson technical support team.
" If you receive a message that the scanner could not find film, click the CONFIGURATION button and uncheck AUTOMATIC THUMBNAIL PREVIEW FOR FILM, then OK, and try the PREVIEW button(page with folded corner) again. In this mode, you will have to manually marquee or crop the slides you wish to scan..."
Now window is 4X5 and scans negatives as it should. Thanks to everyone who chimed in. I hope with this thread I have helped someone else.

Well, I'm not sure what to feel now. I was already to buy a new scanner and you go and tell me what might solve the problem. Rats!.

Now I will have to go home and try this out. If it works and I can scan my 4x5 negatives, then I will really be upset. Now I probably won't be able to go buy a new scanner.

:D

Thanks for completely running this one down. I hope this will solve the problem without GAS.
