My job takes me into many different facilities. Today, I was in a chemical plant that produces/packages pool chemicals. For those that question the purity of pool chemicals for photo use, rest assured. On the dock was a pallet load of Sodium Thiosulphate. The bags were labeled as "Sodium Thiosulphate Pentahydrate-Photo Grade."

Not bad no doubt. The best hypo crystals I've ever seen were made by (or for ) Eastman Kodak in the good old days. I have bought nice stuff off Ebay nice penta-hydrate crystals, still there's just the tiniest bit of grit that I let settle out and decant off the solution. But your point is well taken.
Used as a dechlorinator, also used in tiny amounts to dechlorinate aquariums when starting a new tank. If you look up the wiki for sodium thiosulfate it lists other uses too.
