I booked holidays and flights for September. The plan is to fly into San Diego and drive all the way up to Vancouver. I have 15 days for this trip.
I am planning on bringing a Leica M body, an Instax Mini and lots of film.

Has anybody here ever done that trip?
Any tips on locations to not miss or anything in general would be highly appreciated.

To name a few: Big Sur, Point Lobos , Muir Woods, the Oregon coast esp Cannon Beach, Quinault (the rain forrest), Mt Rainier, Hurricane Ridge outside of Port Angeles. The ferry from Port Angeles can take you to Victoria and a ferry from Vancouver Island can take you to Vancouver. Enjoy! it's a beautiful trip. A suv is probably over kill a mid-size or full-size is all you need.

You know what...I suggest a quick trip over to California's Central Valley (San Joaquin Valley)...it is absolutely amazing
how much agriculture and wide open Horizons there are. The Cotton will be at maturity by then too. Some of the towns
are pretty interesting. I recommend San Luis Obispo, and Cambria, as well as Morro Bay in CA...North of S.F is beautiful
too. In San Diego, you can go to Georges Camera, they sell all kinds of film...some cool towns in San Diego area as you
follow 1 North...Venice Beach up in LA, follow the 1 to Oxnard and Ventura, Santa Barbara is beautiful...Solvang...

Might want to hit the Leica Store in LA. Check out the Getty Museum and Annenberg Space for Photography in LA.

Gas in Cali is $$. I always try to rent minivans or small SUV's.

Some of the smaller, more scenic routes are more fun to drive. So consider something a bit "sporty".

As you get off the ferry from Vancouver Island, you will be driving within a few blocks of where I live.

Enjoy the ferry rides:

Excellent territory to cover here, hard to go too far wrong no matter the route.

I lived in the so-called "Central Valley" AKA San Joaquin Valley in a little town between Fresno and Bakersfield from '03 to '05 when I moved to SD. Lots of trips to the beach (Pismo area) and inland to the twisty and fun foothill roads on the way to Sequoia and Kings Canyon parks. Lots of agriculture in that SJV area but I'd go the beach/mountain route every time. The 99/5 is a mostly straight and boring drive through there so if you can swing the time, I'd take the coast highway.

I've ridden from SD to SF a few times and rode from SD to Vancouver on my way to Anchorage in 2014. Some highlights/favorites from my time in the area and that trip:

San Diego beaches would be first stop: specifically Sunset Cliffs, La Jolla Cove, if you are a nudist hit up Black's Beach for a good time
LA beaches rank lower in my mind, except maybe "Muscle" beach and then Malibu as you head north
Pismo dunes if it is not a holiday weekend (if it is, there will be much much traffic)
Splash cafe's chowder in a bread bowl in Pismo
Solvang and if you are into wine: Los Olivos area
If you decide on I5 to save time in northern California, find Mt. Shasta
Sequoia groves (either Sequoia NP or Muir north of SF) they have a feeling altogether special
Hwy 1 from Pismo to SF, unbeatable in a lot of ways
Portland is a fun city, Seattle feels like a bigger city. Pikes Place Market is a bit of a tourist trap but fun anyway and neat stuff within walking distance.
Seaquest State Park camping in a rain forest
Whidbey Island
Driving up the Olympic peninsula

Off to work now, will update if I think of anything else.

At first blush, it seems like 15 days won't give you much time for sightseeing, but according to google, it's roughly 25 hours of driving time, so that would leave you 12 days or so to look at something other than the inside of the car.

But, as others have indicated, there are zillion choices for things to see and photograph before you even get halfway through California. You may want to consider a shorter trip distance-wise. It would be easy to use 15 days and not get past San Francisco.

I forgot to mention that I have lived in Southern California for 8 years. So I can skip sightseeing there. Just staring in SD to say hi to some friends. It'll get interesting from SLO upwards. I want to shoot landscape mostly and of course document the trip. I haven't been to Oregon so would really like to drive through Oregon on my way up.
But like you all mentioned there is so much stuff to see. Maybe I need to prioritize. Haven't been to Yosemite either. Maybe I only drive the up to SF and then fly to Seatte to save time.

Good one, Eric. I've done the same trip 5-6 times, also by car, at different times of the year. First time, 1967 (when I was about the age you look to be in your photo), last time 2013. A delight to the senses, each and every time.

APUG member Frank has traveled extensively in the USA. I believe he has posted a lengthy and detailed story on his web site about one of his motorcycle trips, I read it and greatly enjoyed it some time ago. Very inspiring. Do look it up.

September is a particularly good time to go. After Labor Day, no crowds of holiday drivers clogging up the highways. Gorgeous weather. Warm days, cool nights. You will likely miss the glorious beauty of the trees changing into their autumn colors (or maybe at the end of your time on the road).

Fifteen days is pushing it a bit. Try not to spend your time driving, driving, driving. Avoid shooting your landscapes from the driver's seat. Get out of the parking lots and walk, walk, walk. The best views are usually about 10-15 minutes away from where you left the car.

The SUV will bankrupt you for gas. Rent the smallest sedan you can find. Plan to stop driving before 5 PM every day, hit the country towns off the main roads, find a good not too expensive motel, they do exist. You can eat well from the supermarkets. Lots of salads, fresh food, cooked chicken, whole wheat bread. Wash all that down with good California wine (in moderation of course).

Also buy a good road map and read it over your lunches and dinners. Pinpoint places of interest. Google them. Plan to visit them. It's the best way to go. How many times have I wished we had the internet and Google in when I first made this trip in the long ago Sixties.

Is film cheaper in Japan? Maybe, but I doubt it. Buy your films in California. OL services will ship to your friends in San Diego. Have it waiting, nice and fresh, when you get there.

The Leica (and which lenses?) is a good choice. As for the Instax, are you taking it with a specific plan in mind (= exhibition)? I personally would pass on the Instax and buy, borrow or beg (don't steal!) a MF camera like a Fuji GA or GS, and use it with black-and-white film. A yellow or light green filter will give you wonderful negatives with exquisite detail and tones. Remember to compensate on exposure for the filter factor. Your call (choice of cameras) entirely, of course.

I'm almost 70 but I intend to do this same trip at least one more time, before I move on to processing my films in The Big Darkroom In The Sky. Also the drive from SF to New Mexico, another life-enhancing trip. I've done this one 13-14 times, and I still want more of it.

Be sure to post images for us all (and especially me) to enjoy.

Thanks a lot ozmoose! Lots of great tips there.
I only have a 35mm lens for my Leica M so that's what I'll bring with me. I'll have to think about bringing a second body.
Film I'll definitely order to my friend's house. One less thing I need to pack.

As I mentioned above the Oregon coast. Worth the drive about 400 miles and at Cannon beach easily accessed Haystack rocks. The rain forest at Qinault are much better than Pike's Place Market in Seattle which once was a real farmer's market but is now a typical tourist stop. If you drive from SF take part of the way through wine country. Album two and three on my website has a few images from that area.

I last did this in a camperized van in the late 1970s - do you think it has changed much?

It should be a lot of fun.

I am curious about one thing though. I expect referring to it as the "Western Seaboard" is at least technically correct, but I don't think I've ever seen it used before for the area.

Has anyone else seen it used that way?
