On my EOS 630 body and Canon 50 1.8 STM lens the AF is not sensitive. Whatever is in the AF brackets has to have LOTS of contrast for the camera to focus or the confirmation light to come on in MF. Is this normal for this model or is mine ailing in the AF department?

Depends on pattern of object. If it fails to lock in landcape orientation, try flipping it 45 or 90 degrees and refocus. It's not bad for its time and was an improvement in speed on the original EOS, the 650 (and features a faster motor drive, and some additional features such as flash EC, ME and custom functions). I usually switch between 630 & RT models on those reasonably rare occasions I need auto focus or TTL flash.

I threw in an AS IS EOS 650 in my KEH order last week. Everything I tried on it works. The AF is much better on the 650. I also found another dirt cheap 630 on Ebay so when it gets here I can compare the 630's.

Right. Also worth checking them with more than one lens, I suppose. I have 650, 620, 630 & RT bodies here myself. I tend to favour the RT especially, for moving subjects, or the 630, but, by the standards of their day, all of them will do a reasonable job. Having said that I don't use autofocus much and usually prefer some sort of manual focus set up.
