Excuse me if this has been tackled somewhere else, and kindly point me to the solution or more info if that's the case. I Googled a bit, but drew a blank on this particular problem.

Equipment: well-used EOS 30v / Elan 7NE

Problem: after shooting a roll and removing it from the camera, the camera will usually not recognize a new roll when it's put in. The 'roll full' indicator remains on or blinking (depending on mode dial selection) in the LCD. Removing the fresh roll allows the camera to turn on again, but it will of course show no film present. Usually the problem corrects itself when leaving the camera on (in one of the shooting modes), removing the batteries for a while until the display goes entirely blank, reinserting the batteries and then opening the back and inserting the new roll. It'll usually then take up the film normally and keep functioning perfectly fine until the roll is full and the cycle repeats.

Clues: unlike my other EOS 30v, this one always shows the batteries as empty (battery indicator showing empty battery, but not blinking), even if brand new ones are installed. I also have the strong impression that the memory battery (assuming this camera has one?) is dead. I think I replaced the door latch on this camera at some point; it's a weak spot and I bought a couple of replacements a few years ago, and I'm pretty sure I did that repair on this particular camera.

Does anybody know what might be the cause of this behavior? It's more of an annoyance than a deal breaker, but it would be nice if I could fix it.

Could it be that it is not detecting you opening the back door? Then it thinks the old roll is still inside.
I'm not sure how they implemented this but it is probably something with a microswitch somewhere. Possibly near the door latch that you already replaced?
That's where I'd start my search...

Yes, that's a very good suggestion! I was starting to suspect the door latch sensing mechanism, but have yet to investigate it. Thanks!

Btw, the camera is loaded with film right now, so I'm going to postpone my investigation until I've finished this roll. In the meantime, any suggestions remain welcome, of course.

The 7e at least allows you to change the rewind speed in the custom function menu, and to set it to leave the leader out. Perhaps if you play with some of those and similar adjustments you can get the camera out of its "funk".

Thanks Matt, I'll give that a try. Btw, I always use the Cf to leave the leader out. I don't think I've ever tried the default setting, so it's worth a shot. The rewind speed Cf I think I never touched.

Good luck in finding the cause of this, hope you get it solved!
And if you do, I'd be interested to read what it was.
(I have two very similar EOS cameras in use... )
